Bonano Lifts UCCS to an Upset Victory over #25 St. Mary's

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team took down #25 St. Mary's University in their first game at Mountain Lion Stadium, and what a game it was. In a very physical game, the Mountain Lions took home the win by a score of 1-0.

The game was fast paced right from the start as both teams were firing off shots and trying to get an early led. UCCS and STMU would combine for 32 total shots, 20 for the Mountain Lions and 12 for the Rattlers. The Rattlers had the edge in shots on goal at 6-3, but the Mountain Lions put constant pressure on the Rattler defense with eight corner kicks and 10 shots in each half.

Senior goalkeeper Scott Jensen had a game to remember as he anchored the Mountain Lions defense with six saves, including a highlight reel worthy save in the second half to keep the score 0-0.

After 77 minutes of back and forth play, junior Sam Bonano finally broke the scoreless tie with a goal off a great assist from Alex VonHolle in the 78th minute. That marks Bonano's first goal of the season and VonHolle's first assist of the year.

The next 12 minutes consisted of great team defense for UCCS as they held off the Rattlers for their first win of the season.

The Mountain Lions will look to carry the momentum from this upset victory into Sunday's matchup against St. Edwards University. The game is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m. inside Mountain Lion Stadium.
