COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team played St. Edward's University to a 3-3 draw on Sunday. In what turned out to be a very exciting marathon of a game, UCCS and SEU finish the final game of this round robin weekend with a double overtime thriller.
Things got started right away as the Hilltoppers drew first blood with a goal in the eighth minute. The Mountain Lions continued to apply pressure throughout the first half with seven shots and four on frame. The constant pressure finally paid off as freshman
Zane Baumgardt found the back of the net off an assist from fellow freshman
Alex Daseler.
The second half proved to be even more exciting, but unfortunately got off to a tough start for the Mountain Lions as junior
Sam Bonano received back-to-back yellow cards and was disqualified from play in the 57
th minute.
The Mountain Lions were forced to play the remainder of the game one man short, but that did not stop their aggressive offense attack as senior
Alex VonHolle scored off a cross from freshman
Liam McGuire in the 69
th minute to put the Mountain Lions up 2-1.
UCCS wasn't done there as less than a minute later senior goalkeeper
Scott Jensen punted the ball downfield and McGuire himself found the net off a remarkable header from about 35 yards out to make the score 3-1, with Jensen getting credit for the assist.
However, SEU proved to be a team with no quit as they were able to score in transition off a UCCS corner kick to bring the score to 3-2 in the 83
rd minute. With time winding down, SEU was putting every ball in the box and it paid dividends as they were able to net the equalizing goal off a deflected save from Jensen to make the score 3-3 with 50 seconds left.
UCCS was unable to score with such little time and the game would go into overtime.
In the first overtime, SEU was the aggressor as they got off four shots and one on goal as opposed to none for UCCS. All the same, neither team was able to score and the game went into a second overtime.
The second overtime frame was similar to the first as SEU out shot UCCS 5-1, but to no avail as again neither team was able to break the tie.
UCCS ends this round robin weekend with a 1-0-1 record, bringing their overall record to 1-1-1 so far this season. Next weekend, the Mountain Lions will be on the road as they take on Regis University on Friday, September 20 at 4 p.m. and Colorado School of Mines on Sunday, September 22 at 2:30 p.m.
