GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer team handled Colorado Mesa University on Sunday as the Mountain Lions remain perfect on the season with a 2-0 win over the Mavericks inside Walker Field.
No. 2 UCCS (8-0-0, 4-0-0 RMAC) scored two second half goals as the Mountain Lions held CMU (4-4-0,1-3-0) to only three shots and no shots on goal. UCCS held the advantage in shots 14-3 and corner kicks 6-1, with
Shanade Hopcroft leading the way with four shots as
Kaitlin Hinkle and
Tanner Sanders each notched two shots on frame and found the back of the net.
The opening 45 minutes resulted in a scoreless tie as the Mountain Lions' backline continued to post stellar defensive play, holding the Mavericks to zero shots in the first half.
After completely shutting out CMU in the first half, the defensive pressure resumed in the second half as UCCS allowed just three shots and registered their second consecutive game of holding the opponent to no shots on goal.
With the UCCS defense holding the Mavericks in check, the Mountain Lion offense found their opening as Hopcroft connected with Hinkle in the 58th minute to break the scoreless tie and give UCCS a 1-0 lead. Later in the half, Sanders took over in the 86
th minute to put the game away as she buried her fifth goal of the season for the 2-0 win.
UCCS sits atop the RMAC standings as the only undefeated team in the RMAC, as well as being the only undefeated team in the South Central Region.
The Mountain Lions will return home next weekend as their next match comes against Westminster College at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4 for Breast Cancer Awareness Night.
