COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The #1 University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer won their ninth game in a row tonight as they took down Westminster College (WC). In a game that was closer than their most recent matchups, UCCS defeated the Griffins by a score of 3-0.
#1 UCCS (9-0, 5-0 RMAC) handled WC (4-2-2, 1-2 RMAC) in a very physical game. The Mountain Lions outshot WC 13-10 in total and 7-3 in shots on goal. Those shots on goal are the first UCCS has allowed in two games.
Shanade Hopcroft again led the Mountain Lions in shots with four, while
Savannah Mills,
Kendall Stevenson,
Tanner Sanders and
Aleesa Muir all had two shots in the game.
In the first half, it was a slow back and forth game as neither team could get into a rhythm early. However, that all changed in the 25
th minute when Hopcroft headed in a beautiful goal off a great assist from
Mitsy Ramirez, making the score 1-0. Neither team would add another and the half would end at 1-0.
In the second half, UCCS got things goings a little quicker as Sanders found the net off an assist from Hopcroft in the 56
th minute, making the score 2-0 UCCS.
WC tried to fight back into the game but the UCCS defense stood strong yet again as they continually stopped the WC offense. Then, in the 86
th minute, UCCS put the nail in coffin as Mills broke through the Griffin defense off another assist from Hopcroft, making the score 3-0 and the lead insurmountable.
Hopcroft was involved in all aspects of scoring for UCCS as she nets a goal and two assists in this game.
The Mountain Lions return to the field on Sunday, October 6 to take on Dixie State University. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. inside Mountain Lion Stadium.
