COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team fell to Dixie State University (DSU) in the second game of Homecoming weekend on Sunday. After trying to mount a second half comeback, the Mountain Lions eventually came up short by a score of 3-1.
UCCS (1-5-1, 0-4 RMAC) came out flat to start the game as DSU (4-3-1, 3-1 RMAC) dominated the first half. DSU outshot UCCS 12-7 in the first half including 6-1 in shots on goal. The second half was much more competitive as UCCS outshot the Trailblazers 8-6 total and 4-2 shots on goal. Senior
Alex VonHolle led all players in shots and shots on goal with seven and four, respectively.
In the first half, DSU set the tone early with a goal in the third minute by John Joseph. They were not done as Moises Medina added another goal in the 11
th minute to make the score 2-0 within the first 12 minutes of the game. Senior keeper
Scott Jensen recorded four saves in the half to keep the score 2-0 heading into the second.
The second half was a different story as the Mountain Lions came out with a chip on their shoulder. It would pay off as VonHolle broke through the DSU defense for an unassisted goal in the 48
th minute to make the score 2-1 and put UCCS right back in the game.
Unfortunately for UCCS, their comeback attempt would be put to rest as Guglielmo Bianchi scored for DSU in the 87
th minute to seal the game for the Trailblazers. UCCS had a few more shots on goal in the final two minutes by VonHolle and
Liam McGuire, but they could not get them past the keeper as the Mountain Lions fell 3-1.
Next weekend the Mountain Lions will be on the road. On Friday, October 4, UCCS will be in Pueblo, Colo. taking on Colorado State University – Pueblo at 7 p.m. On Sunday, October 6 UCCS will be in Alamosa, Colo. taking on Adams State University at 1 p.m.
