PREVIEW | Men's Soccer Back Home as they Host Westminster and DSU

This Week's Games
  • The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team will be hosting two RMAC opponents for Homecoming this weekend.
  • On Friday, September 27, UCCS will play Westminster College at 6 p.m. inside Mountain Lion Stadium.
  • On Sunday, September 29, UCCS will play Dixie State University (DSU) at 1 p.m. at Mountain Lion Stadium.
Game Coverage Last Time Out
  • The Mountain Lions had a tough road trip last weekend as they went 0-2 against Regis University and Colorado School of Mines, bringing their overall record to 1-3-1 this season, with and 0-2 record in the RMAC.
  • The game against Regis was a battle as it took overtime to decide it.
  • UCCS struck the first blow in the 10th minute as senior Jack Mills found the net off an assist from Alex VonHolle. The Mountain Lions ended the first half leading 2-1 thanks to another goal from Samuel Gomez off an assist from freshman Alex Daseler.
  • In the second half, Regis scored in the 55th minute to tie the game at 2-2. After 20 minutes of scoreless play, Vonholle found the net off an assist from freshman Kolby Raineri.
  • With time running out, Regis scored the equalizing goal with five minutes to go, sending the game into overtime.
  • Regis went on to score the game winning goal in the 98th minute to take the victory 3-2
  • Sunday's contest was less competitive as Colorado School of Mines shutout the Mountain Lions 0-2.
  • CSM scored one goal in each half on 20 total shots (5 on goal).
  • UCCS struggled against the Oredigger defense as they only managed to get off five shots (one on goal).
RMAC Record/Standings
  • UCCS currently sits in ninth place in the RMAC with their 1-3-1 overall and 0-2 RMAC records.
  • Colorado School of Mines and Westminster sit at the top of the conference, each boasting a 4-2 overall record and a 2-0 start in the RMAC.
The Series
  • Against Westminster, UCCS has had success as they own 12-6 record, including an 8-2 record in the last 10 meetings between the teams. In the most recent matchup, Westminster broke an eight-game winning streak held by UCCS with a 3-2 win. UCCS will look to get another streak going on Friday.
  • Against DSU, the sample size is much smaller as UCCS owns a 1-1 record. The Mountain Lions did win the most recent matchup last year by a score of 3-2.
Scouting the Opponent
  • Westminster's 4-2 record (2-0 in the RMAC) is currently tied for the best in the RMAC. The Griffins have scored 14 goals on 63 shots (34 on goal) while only allowing five goals.
  • The Griffins also have nine assists and 24 corner kicks this year.
  • Individually, senior Danny Darelli and freshman Max Bingman are leading the offense for Westminster. Darelli leads the team in goals (five, tied for most in the RMAC) and points (10, tied for most in the RMAC), while Bingman is second on the team in both goals and points with four and nine respectively (both second in the RMAC).
  • Keeper Will Desantis has played all four games for the Griffins and has accumulated 33 saves (third in the RMAC) and a save percentage of 86 percent (second in the RMAC).
  • DSU currently has a 2-3-1 record this year, with a 1-1 record in the RMAC. That puts the Trailblazers in seventh place in the RMAC.
  • DSU has scored eight goals on 70 shots (39 on goal) and has given up goals as well. The Trailblazers also have eight assists, 31 corner kicks and a shots on goal percentage of 55 percent.
  • Individually, senior Moises Medina and freshman Guglielmo Bianchi lead the offense for DSU. Medina leads the team in goals (three) and points (seven) and has the team's only penalty goal this year. Bianchi is second on the team in goals (two) and points (four).
  • Goalkeeper Zach Nielson has 34 saves (second in the RMAC) and a save percentage of 81 percent (third in the RMAC).
Hot Takes
  • Three different Mountain Lions found the net this weekend, with two scoring their first goals of the season.
  • Samuel Gomez and Jack Mills scored the first two goals for UCCS on Friday, marking the first goal of the season for each of them.
  • Alex VonHolle scored his second goal and added another assist on Friday as well, giving him two each this season.
  • VonHolle is again moving up the UCCS All-Time Leaderboards as he now ranks seventh in goals (22, tied), second in assists (16, tied), and fifth in points (60).
  • Kolby Raineri and Alex Daseler both tallied an assist over the weekend, which marks Raineri's first as a Mountain Lion and Daseler's second this year, tied with VonHolle and Liam McGuire for the most on the team.
  • Keeper Scott Jensen added 11 saves to his season stats, giving him 22 on the season.

  • The forecast for Colorado Springs, Colo. on Friday, September 27 shows mostly sunny skies a high of 75 degrees. Temperatures should be around 60 degrees for game time.
  • On Sunday, September 29, the forecast shows clear skies and a high of 77 degrees. Wind will be a factor as it is expected to gust up to 18 miles per hour.
RMAC Leaders
  • To this point in the season, Alex VonHolle and Scott Jensen rank in the top-10 of multiple RMAC statistical categories.
  • VonHolle ranks eighth in shots (17), ninth in points (six), eighth in points per game (1.20) and fifth in assists (two, tied).
  • Jensen ranks eighth in goals against average (1.89), sixth in saves (22), ninth in save percentage (67 percent), and seventh in saves per game (4.40).
UCCS Under Head Coach Brian Miller
  • The Mountain Lions are now 11-10-4 under coach Miller. UCCS will look to improve on that record this weekend with two opponents they have historically had success against.

  • UCCS will be on the road next weekend for a pair of RMAC matchups.
  • On Friday, Oct. 4, UCCS will be taking on Colorado State University – Pueblo at 7 p.m. in Pueblo, Colo.
  • On Sunday, Oct. 6, the Mountain Lions will be in Alamosa, Colo. facing off against Adams State University at 1 p.m.
