PREVIEW | Volleyball Kicks Off Conference Season with White Out Night

THIS WEEK'S MATCHES

The University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team will host No. 18 Regis University and Colorado Christian University in the third week of in season match-ups. UCCS kicks off the weekend against RU and closes out the white out on weekend to CCU in the Gallogly Events Center. The first 250 UCCS students to Friday's match will receive a free White Out t-shirt.

LAST TIME OUT

  • UCCS Mountain Lions closed the Mountain Lion Invitational 1-3. The Mountain Lions kicked off their Invitational with an action packed match against Angelo state where they ultimately were defeated 3-0. The first two sets went into extra points and the team ended with a .500 hitting mark thanks to Taylor Smith, Lauryn Shockely, and Josie Russell. UCCS fell in their second match to Emporia State, 3-0. Despite the 21 attack errors collected by the team, Raelynn Edge made an impressive 22 assists with Emily Ettel following close behind with 11. In the night match against Arkansas-Fort Smith, the team stacked up impressive stats despite their 3-1 loss. The team had a match high of 16 kills in the third set, while Lauren Brown hit .381 with 10 kills. Jordyn Kinsey and Hannah Ammerman played impressive defense on the back line with 28 digs and Ammerman adding seven kills to her stats. The team broke their five match losing streak against Minot State. UCCS swept the Beavers with a season-high of .385 at the net. The Mountain Lions found their rhythm in set two as they dominated the court with 15 kills and only two errors, giving them a .760 side out percentage.
 

The Series

  • Regis leads the match-ups 37-7, The Mountain Lions last defeated the Rangers in September of 2016 at home.
  • UCCS won the last match-up against CCU, 3-1, last October making their record 30-21 overall.
 

Scouting Report

  • Regis University enters Gallogly Events Center with a 6-2 record and looks to continue their three-match win streak against UCCS after their leading last October (W, 2018). The Rangers also bring with them the two time RMAC Defensive Player of the Week, senior Nikki Kennedy.
  • The Cougars enter the weekend with a 4-4 record coming off a road loss at the Dallas Baptist Tournament. Last time UCCS faced Colorado Christian the Mountain Lions earned win in a four-set match.

Hot Takes

  • Emily Ettel continues to be a dominating presence for the Mountain Lions with five aces over the weekend and making 41 of the 46 assists against Minot State.
  • Grace Nelson set a season high of 13 kills in the match against the Beavers as well.
  • Taylor Smith added to her stats line with 36 kills, 16 digs, and six block assists over the weekend.

RMAC Leaders

  • Emily Etell soars into the #2 spot for assists in the RMAC, averaging 10.62 assists per game.
  • Jordyn Kinsey ranks #8 in the RMAC for digs, averaging 3.93 per game.

UCCS Under Head Coach Chrissy Elder

  • Chrissy Elder is in her seventh season as Head Coach of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball program. In her first six seasons, Elder has led the Mountain Lions to the RMAC Tournament every year, and has coached 19 all-conference and 28 academic all-conference performers.
  • Elder came to UCCS from the University of Central Missouri where she was a member of a coaching staff that lead the Jennies to the NCAA Division II national semifinals in 2010 and the national quarterfinals in 2011. She joined the staff in 2007 as an assistant coach before she was promoted to Head Assistant Coach in 2009. Prior to joining the staff at Central Missouri, Elder was the interim head coach for the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She joined the Kangaroo staff as a graduate assistant coach in 2005. Elder finished her collegiate playing career at Pittsburg State University, where she also doubled as a student assistant coach for the Gorillas in her senior season. She was an All-American and All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association setter. In 2005, Elder earned her bachelor's degree in recreation and fitness management from Pittsburg State, and in 2008 she went on to earn her master's degree from UMKC.

T-MINUS 7 Wins

  • Coach Elder is seven wins away from reaching the 100-win milestone marks. An interim head coach in 2006 at Missouri-Kansas City where she went 7-23, she has garnered 86 wins at UCCS (86-87), including three winning seasons. In seven years as a head coach, Elder has a 93-110 record.
