Baseball Drops Game Two to ThunderWolves, 1-5

PUEBLO, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team drops game two to Colorado State University-Pueblo, as the ThunderWolves capitalize off Mountain Lion mistakes to bring the score to a final of 5-1 in favor of CSU-Pueblo.

Junior Daniel Silva started for UCCS as he threw four full innings, only giving up one run on eight hits in a no-decision effort. Hayden Salverda came in relief to throw 2 2/3 innings as he only gave up one hit, with Jon Sotto receiving the loss as he gave up four runs on one hit. Walker Rumsey, Matt McDermott, and Matthew Clarke each went 2-for-4 in the ball game with Michael Bennin recording the lone RBI off a double.

Friday night's game began with a scoreless first inning, as the ThunderWolves scored first in the bottom of the second inning. CSU-Pueblo started the inning off with a single and ended the inning with an infield single to take a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, the Mountain Lions came to plate one run to tie the game up 1-1. Cody Norton showed patience as he watched four straight balls to place the tying run on first. With two outs, Bennin stepped up for UCCS by hitting in the speedy Norton with an RBI double that Bennin tried to stretch into a triple but got thrown out to end the inning.

After giving up the one run in the second, the Mountain Lions held back the ThunderWolves for five straight innings as they recorded seven strikeouts and held CSU-pueblo to three hits within that span. After shutting out the ThunderWolves for five innings, CSU-pueblo capitalized off a UCCS error to keep the inning alive as they plated four runs in the bottom of the eighth. UCCS retired the first batter of the inning, but the next batter reached base on a hit by pitch and made his way to third after stealing second and making his way to third on the catcher's throwing attempt. With the go-ahead run on third with one out, the Mountain Lions called for the infield to shift in to have a play at home. Relief pitcher Jon Sotto was able to get the next batter to chase and get a groundball out, to make it two outs in the eighth inning.

Unfortunately, the next play turned into a fielding error and scored the go-ahead run as CSU-Pueblo took the lead 2-1. Later in the inning, a three-run home run gave the ThunderWolves a four-run lead as the final score turned to 5-1 in favor of CSU-Pueblo.

UCCS left 10 runners on base during the game with seven out of the 10 runners being stranded in scoring position.

The Mountain Lions look to bounce back as they wrap up the series tomorrow afternoon with a double-header at Rawlings Field. Game one is set to start at 3 p.m. against CSU-Pueblo.
