PUEBLO, Colo. -- The University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team split Saturday's double-header with the Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves to wrap up the regular season, as the Mountain Lions took game one and the ThunderWolves winning game two.
In game one, the Mountain Lions captured their first win of the series by routing the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves to a final score of 10-7.
Senior,
Eric Neeley bagged his first win of the season as Christian Manomano got the start in game one of the double-header. Manmano received a no-decision after giving up seven runs (six earned) in four innings, with Neeley coming in to record two full innings and only allowing one hit. Sophomore
Dagin Renck came in big for the Mountain Lions as he registered his first save of the season to secure the much-needed win.
On the offensive side of the ball, it was the bottom of the UCCS lineup that produced asÂ
Alex Bates received his fourth start of the season and finished the day batting a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored and one RBI.
Walker Rumsey followed right behind Bates in the eight-spot to record a team high four RBI in a 3-for-4 day, as Rumsey hit two doubles in the game.
With CSU-Pueblo scoring first in the first two games of the series, UCCS broke that pattern by striking first in the top half of the second inning with one run.
Ryan Schmidt singled to right field to get the inning started as Bates came up later in the inning to drive in Schmidt with an RBI single up the middle.
The one-run lead for the Mountain Lions did not last as the ThunderWolves answered back with four runs in the home half of the second inning. A bases clearing double, followed by another stand up double, gave CSU-Pueblo a 4-1 lead after two innings of play.
The Mountain Lions kept the runs coming in as they drove in four runs of their own in the top half of the third inning to take their second lead of the game.
Tyler Matheny led off for UCCS with a double to the left center gap, as
Jake Anderson singled up the middle to place runners on first and third with no outs. After scoring the first run of the game in the second, Schmidt came up in the third to drive in his first RBI with a single, and once again giving the Mountain Lions runners on first and third. Able to put a ball in play and bring the second run of the inning across,
John Mallon reached base on a fielder's choice to bring the game within one run. To record his second hit of the ball game, Bates then came up to send a ball right back up the middle for a base hit to place runners on second and third as he advanced to second on the throw. With two outs and runners in scoring position, Rumsey laced a ball up the middle for a two RBI single and gave UCCS the 5-4 lead in the top half of the third.
With UCCS holding a one-run lead into the bottom of the third inning, the ThunderWolves were able to tie the game at 5-5 as a double to right center gave them life, and a single drove the run in to even things up as the game headed into the fourth.
CSU-pueblo made it three consecutive innings of scoring as they brought two runs in the fourth to take a 7-5 lead over UCCS. The innings started off with a single as the next batter reached base off a Mountain Lion error to place runners on first and third with no outs. An RBI single drove in one run, as a sacrifice fly later in the inning accounted for the second run, and a retake of the lead by the ThunderWolves.
Just as CSU-Pueblo recorded three straight innings of scoring, the Mountain Lions came on strong to post five runs in three innings while shutting out the ThunderWolves to secure the 10-7 win. Rumsey tallied two more RBI as
Matt McDermott went deep for a two-run home run in the seventh inning to give the three-run cushion.
In game two, the Mountain Lions fell short to the ThunderWolves at a final score of 2-4 to wrap up the series.
Senior
Joe Slocum threw a full six innings as he allowed four runs on six hits and four strikeouts. Rumsey tallied UCCS' two RBI with a home run, as Anderson and McDermott finished 2-for-3.
The Mountain Lions came to out-hit the ThunderWolves 8-6 in the game two of the double-header, as UCCS recorded three of their eight hits in a two-run second inning to take the first lead of the game, 2-0. A leadoff double from Schmidt put UCCS in a great position to put runs on the board, as Rumsey came up to the plate and drove a deep fly ball to left center field for a two-run home run.
The 2-0 Mountain Lion went into the bottom of the third inning, as the ThunderWolves strung together three consecutive hits on two outs to set up a four-run inning. CSU-Pueblo ended the inning with four hits as they took the lead 4-2 after three innings.
Slocum kept the ThunderWolves in check after the third inning as he only allowed two hits for the rest of the game. UCCS left eight runners on base in the ball game, compared to CSU-Pueblo's four in the game as the Mountain Lions could not get any runs across and come up short at the final score of 2-4.
With the regular season coming to an end, the Mountain Lions (28-22, 20-16 RMAC) currently sit fourth in the RMAC standings and will be making their third RMAC Tournament appearance. UCCS has made the RMAC Tournament in all three years of the program's short history.
