Alex Cook hit a foul ball to left field that scored
Kaley Wagner who tagged from third base to score the game-winning run for the University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team. The Mountain Lions defeated Colorado Christian University, 4-3, to close out the home series. UCCS fell in Sunday's first game, 6-1, as the Cougars won 3-of-4 games.
Braelyne Crenshaw earned the victory against the Cougars, pitching the final two and two-third innings. Crenshaw entered the game with the Mountain Lions trailing 3-2 in the fifth inning. She retired her first two batters to close out the inning. Crenshaw held the Cougars scoreless on two hits as UCCS moves to 18-21 overall and 14-13 in the conference.
Cook accounted for three of the Mountain Lions four runs after hitting a two-run home run in the third inning that scored
Melissa Martinek that also gave UCCS their first lead of the weekend, 2-1.
CCU regained the lead in the fifth inning, 3-2, on a home run and a double.
Entering the bottom of the seventh inning and down one run,
Payton Romines led off for UCCS with a single to left center.
Natalie Searle entered the game for Romines as a pinch runner and moved to third base after
Taylor White reached first from a throwing error. White was relieved of base running duties by Wagner. With one out on the scoreboard, Martinek reached base on a fielder's choice that ended in Searle scoring the game-tying run. The Cougars made a pitching change with one out and runners on the corners when Cook hit a ball in foul territory. The Cougars left fielder snagged the foul ball out of the air as Wagner tagged up for the winning run.
Cook finished with one hit, one run and three runs batted in. Martinek registered two hits, one run and an RBI to close out the series.
In Sunday's morning game, Martinek hit a double in the sixth inning and was brought home on Cook's single for the Mountain Lions only run of the game, and their first run of the series.
UCCS was unable to put out the Cougars five-run lead after five innings, falling 6-1.
At the plate,
Taylor Reidhead accounted for two of the Mountain Lions six hits. In the circle, she pitched the first five innings, surrendering five runs on seven hits.
The Mountain Lions will head to Spearfish, S.D. to take on Black Hills State University on April 13-14.
