ALAMOSA, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team split Saturday's double-header against Adams State as the Grizzlies took game one, with UCCS grabbing game two at the ASU Baseball Field.
In game one, a tightly contested game leaned in favor of Adams State as they topped the Mountain Lions 4-3.
Senior
Colin Cicere started the game for UCCS as he went a full five innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits in a losing effort, as fellow senior
Joe Slocum came in relief to close out the sixth inning and allow no hits with just one walk. ASU starting pitcher Daniel Brennan recorded his first win of the season as he went six innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits with four strikeouts.
The Grizzlies out-hit UCCS 6-5 in the ballgame and capitalized off Mountain Lion miscues to score two runs in the sixth inning and take the one-run win.
UCCS grabbed the first lead of the game with
Matthew Clarke reaching base on an error and coming around to score after a
Matt Berg infield single and a passed ball that put Clarke into scoring position, where
Evan Richards drove him in with a groundball to second base to make the score 1-0 in the first inning.
In the third inning,
Matt Berg put up another run with a solo shot to left field to lead off the inning and bring the score to 2-0 in the top half of the third.
ASU came to slate their first runs of the game in the bottom half of the third as back-to-back hits tied up the game with a single up the middle, followed by a two-run home run to make the score 2-2.
Starting pitchers
Colin Cicere and Daniel Brennan were able to keep runs from coming across in the fourth and fifth innings before both teams plated runs in the sixth.
UCCS'
Jake Anderson notched the Mountain Lions' sixth home run of the series with a solo home run to dead center field to break the tie, and give UCCS the 3-2 advantage.
The bottom of the sixth saw the last Adams State lead as they plated two runs by taking advantage of UCCS mistakes. ASU started the inning off with a walk and an infield single to put runners on first and second, where a throwing error from behind the plate put both runners into scoring position with no outs. A wild pitch then brought one run across for the Grizzlies as a single later in the inning brought in the second run to make the score 4-3.
Game two shaped up to be another close game until UCCS had a sixth inning surge to defeat Adams State 8-3 and take a 2-1 series lead.
Junior
Christian Manmano picked up his second win of the season after throwing a complete game, allowing three runs on six hits and six strikeouts. Catcher
Ryan Schmidt led the way offensively as he went 2-for-3 with four RBI and a grand slam.
For the third straight game, the Mountain Lions put the first run up on the scoreboard as Clarke got the first inning going with a single to left field. Clark was able to get into scoring position after a Berg walk sent him to second, and a
Cody Norton single up the middle brought Clarke around for a 1-0 UCCS lead. Adams State matched UCCS in the bottom half of the first, after a runner reached base with a single and was brought around later in the inning with a double down the right field line.
Redshirt freshman
Henry Ryan got the start at first base and led off the second inning with a double to the right center gap, as he went 2-for-2 in the ball game. Schmidt recorded his first hit of the game with a single to put runners on first and third. The two consecutive hits were followed up by a
Walker Rumsey sacrifice fly to right field, which brought in Ryan and recaptured the UCCS lead 2-1.
To make it three consecutive innings of scoring for the Mountain Lions, Richards sent a single up the middle to get on base in the third inning. Norton then hit an infield single towards the shortstop where a throwing error advanced him to second, and scored Richards to make the score 3-1 after three innings.
However, ASU did not go away as they tallied one run in the fourth and fifth inning to tie the game at 3-3. The Grizzlies played some small ball in the fourth to get a runner over to third base where a single drove in the one run. In the next inning, Adams State hit a solo home run to make the game interesting as they headed into the sixth.
It was in the sixth inning where the Mountain Lions provided a five-run scoring surge. UCCS started the inning in the middle part of the lineup, with Richards and Norton each drawing a walk to put runners on first and second with no outs. Six-hole hitter Ryan came up next to hit a single and load the bases for on-deck hitter Schmidt who laced a ball to deep left field for a grand slam. UCCS later scored one more run, thanks in part to a Clarke sacrifice fly to bring the score 8-3.
Manmano closed out the ball game in the bottom of the seventh with
Matt McDermott providing an unassisted double play with a line out, then coming up to strike out the next batter to seal the win.
To wrap up the series, UCCS and ASU will play game four Sunday, Apr. 7 at 12 p.m.
