Softball Wins on Walk off Hit for the Eighth Time this Season

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – For the eighth time this season, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team won a game in walk off fashion.  In game two of a four-game series, Rayle Glover hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead UCCS to a 15-14 home win over Adams State University.  The Mountain Lions run-ruled ASU in the series opener Friday afternoon, 9-1 (five innings).

Glover's home run was the third time UCCS won on a walk off home run.  Payton Romines hit back-to-back walk off home runs against Colorado State-Pueblo on Feb. 24.

The wins improve the Mountain Lions to 25-24 overall and 21-16 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while winning their 17th game at home (17-4).  ASU drops to 12-35, 12-23 RMAC.

Today's nine-inning win was the Mountain Lions third extra-inning win, while also recording their ninth run-rule win.

Game One | UCCS 9, ASU 1 (5 innings)
Taylor Reidhead earned both wins in the circle for UCCS today.  She pitched a complete five-inning game to start the series, allowing only one run on seven hits while sitting down seven ASU batters.

UCCS scored at least one run in each of their four innings at the plate.  Alex Cook scored the first run of the game in the first inning after reaching base on a single.  She moved to third base from Peyton Reisman's double to centerfield and rounded third base to score the first run after the centerfielder overthrew the third baseman.

After holding ASU to three-up, three-down in the second inning, Lexi Andersen blasted her second home run of the season on a two-run shot over the left centerfield fence to give UCCS a 3-0 lead.

Reisman added two more runs batted in when she went yard in the third inning to score Cook for the second time in three innings.

In the fourth inning with Sierra Batchelor on third and Leigh Lancaster on first, Melissa Martinek joined the home run club for her ninth dinger of the year, boosting UCCS' lead to 8-0.  Reidhead batted in an insurance run (Cook) to close out the fourth inning for UCCS.

The lone run for the Grizzlies came from Angel Micciulli's home run in the fifth inning.

Adams State led seven runners on base, four of which were in scoring position.

Cook tallied three hits on three at-bats and scored three runs.  Reisman also went 3-for-3 at the plate, accounting for three runs and scoring one.  Andersen chipped in two RBI on one hit and scored one run while making nine putouts behind the plate.

Game Two | UCCS 15, ASU 14 (9 innings)
UCCS trailed the Grizzlies twice after six complete innings of action before coming back to plate seven runs in the final three innings.

Reisman hit her second home run of the day to give UCCS a 2-1 lead in the first inning. Reisman's homer was the third time today she drove in Cook for a run.

The Grizzlies tied the game in the second inning, 2-2, on a sacrifice fly while holding the Mountain Lions scoreless.

ASU plated two more runs in the third inning, but UCCS responded with three of their own runs to break the tie and snag a 5-4 lead after three innings.  Glover notched her first of two home runs with a two-run home run that scored Sierra Batchelor who was pinch running for Reidhead.  Catcher Taylor White's double to left field plated Sawyer Brewster for the one-run lead.

The Grizzlies exploded for four runs on four hits and a UCCS error to take their first lead of the day, 8-5.  The Mountain Lions were held scoreless in the bottom half of the fourth and fifth innings.

Another run by the Grizzlies in the top of the sixth inning extended their lead to four runs heading into the bottom of the inning.  ASU turned a double play to clear the bases before Cook doubled to center field.  Reisman brought Cook home again before Glover hit a single to right field to drive in Reidhead and Resiman to bring UCCS within one run of ASU, 9-8.

A three-run home run in the seventh inning by ASU's Sarah Rocha brought the Grizzlies lead back to four runs.

UCCS mounted their comeback in the seventh inning.  Andersen started the charge when she entered the game for White.  Andersen led off the inning with a single and reached second base after a fielding error by ASU's second baseman that also led to Lancaster reaching base on a fielder's choice.  Bryn Horton loaded the bases on a single when she entered the game as a pinch hitter.  Martinek hit a pop up to first base for the first out of the inning but not before scoring Andersen.  Cook tied the game and sent it to extra innings with a three-run home run to right center, marking her fifth home run of the season.

Both teams remained in check in the eighth inning, forcing the ninth inning that saw the Grizzlies score their 13th and 14th runs of the game.

Trailing 13-14 in the bottom half of the ninth, Cook led off the inning with a single to center field.  With one out on the board, Reidhead hit a line ball to the pitcher and advanced to second on a throwing error, placing her and Cook in scoring position.  With the count at 2-1, Glover drove the ball over the left field fence to clinch the win, 15-14.

Cooke, Reidhead and Glover each produced four hits in game two.  Glover went 4-for-5 with seven RBI and two runs while also drawing a walk.  Cook scored four times and drove in three runs, while Reidhead scored twice.  Reisman added three RBI and scored twice from two hits.

Braelyne Crenshaw started in the circle for the Mountain Lions, pitching the first 3.1 innings, allowing eight runs on 10 hits.  Cami Duffey entered the game in the fourth inning to pitch five innings, surrendering six runs on 10 hits.  Reidhead made her second appearance of the day in the ninth inning with the game tied at 12-12 and runners on first and second base.  She held ASU to one hit and no runs for her 11th win the season.

Both teams will be back in action on Saturday for the final games of the regular season.  First pitch of the doubleheader will go out at 11 a.m.  Following the series finale, the Mountain Lions will hold a special senior day presentation on the field.
