COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team finished their regular season on a high note, completing the series sweep over Adams State University at Mountain Lion Field Saturday afternoon.
The Mountain Lions run-ruled the Grizzlies in five innings in both games, 12-3 and 21-4. The 21 runs scored tied a season high by any team in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Fort Lewis College also tallied 21 runs against ASU on March 22.
In both wins today, the Mountain Lions combined for 33 runs, 33 hits, six doubles, and four home runs while not committing a defensive error.
Following the completion of today's second game, all six UCCS seniors were honored on the field:
Lexi Andersen,
Rayle Glover,
Leigh Lancaster,
Amanda Nobles,
Melissa Martinek and
Taylor Reidhead.
Game One | UCCS 12, ASU 3 (5 innings)
Reidhead recorded her second complete five-inning win in two days after holding the Grizzlies to three runs on four hits.
The Mountain Lions jumped to a quick 5-0 lead in the first inning behind Reidhead's single that scored
Alex Cook and Martinek. Andersen chipped in a three-run home to close out the inning.
A home run in the top half of the second inning put the Grizzlies on the scoreboard but the Mountain Lions matched the run in the bottom part of the inning after
Peyton Reisman's hit to left field scored Martinek.
Martinek's 20
th double of the season came in the third inning to score Lancaster. Cook repeated Martinek's double for her 12
th this season, scoring Martinek.
Leading 8-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, Andersen notched her second home run of the game that also scored Glover from second base. Martinek sealed the win with a hard single to right field that plated Lancaster and Nobles for the 12
th and final run.
Martinek led the offense going 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs batted in and three runs scored. Andersen totaled five RBI and scored twice on two hits, all of which came from two home runs.
Game Two | UCCS 21, ASU 4 (5 innings)
The Mountain Lions put an exclamation mark on their last regular season home game, exploding for 21 runs on 19 hits.
UCCS blew open the game in the first inning, scoring 10 runs on seven hits while 15 Mountain Lions batted. Highlighted by
Sawyer Brewster's grand slam, UCCS drew five walks and added two doubles for a 10-0 lead.
Reidhead, who notched her third start in the circle on the weekend, combined with the defense to hold ASU hitless in the first two innings.
The offensive momentum from the first inning carried into the second inning as UCCS ripped the ball for five more runs on six hits, including Reidhead's three-run home run.
UCCS' bats stayed on fire as they pounded in six more runs on six hits in the third and fourth innings.
Three of the Grizzlies four runs in the final game came as a result of home runs.
Six Mountain Lions posted at least two hits with Glover leading the team, going 4-for-4 with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Cook chipped in three hits, three runs and two RBI, while Reidhead accounted for three hits, five RBI and two runs.
Martinek, Reisman, Reidhead and Glover each hit a double. Reisman also drew two walks and Glover recorded two doubles.
Reidhead pitched the first 2 2/3 innings, holding ASU to two runs on two hits.
Braelyne Crenshaw finished the game in the circle, allowing two runs on four hits.
In four games against Adams State, the Mountain Lions accounted for 57 runs, 64 hits, 25 extra-base hits (14 doubles, 11 home runs), 111 total bases and 16 walks. Three of Andersen's five hits this weekend went yard; she entered the weekend with one home run this season.
The Mountain Lions, who entered the weekend sixth in the conference standings, will compete in the conference tournament May 2-4. The official bracket will be announced later this evening.
