THIS WEEK
The University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team will be hosting Adams State University (ASU) in a four-game series for their last regular season series before the RMAC Tournament. The games will be played on Friday, Apr. 26 and Saturday, Apr. 27. Friday will feature a double header with games scheduled for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday will also feature a double, with the games scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Following the games on Saturday, there will be a Senior Day celebration honoring the six seniors on the UCCS roster.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
Since the 2013 season, UCCS has a record of 10-14 against ASU. Up until last season, UCCS had not won multiple games against the Grizzlies since 2013. Last year, the Mountain Lions were able to turn the tide as they took the series 3-1, scoring 23 runs on 36 hits including five doubles, four triples and two home runs. UCCS best game in that series was a 13-4 win where they tallied 14 hits including three triples and two home runs.Â
SCOUTING THE GRIZZLIES
The Grizzlies have a 12-33 record this season, which includes a 12-21 record in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC). In their most recent series, ASU split four games with Regis University as they scored 23 runs on 40 hits, including seven doubles, two triples and five home runs. As a team, ASU ranks in the bottom half of the RMAC in batting average (.283, 10
th), runs scored (189, ninth), hits (322, ninth), triples (seven, eighth) home runs (24, 10
th) and RBI (158, ninth). Their best team ranking is fifth in doubles with 76. Individually, the Grizzlies are led by sophomore Brittany Phillips and junior Shelby Haskins. Phillips is leading the team in batting average (.359), hits (37) and triples (three). She also ranks second on the team in home runs and RBI (four and 18 respectively) and third in doubles with seven. Haskins ranks second on the team in batting average (.316) and hits (30), but leads the team in home runs (five) and RBI (23). Defensively, Brittany Phillips (5-12) is also the number two starting pitcher for the Grizzlies as she has seen the second most starts on the team (15, 21 appearances). Phillips has allowed 116 runs (93 earned) on 146 hits and has 34 strikeouts, earning her a 6.62 ERA this season. Jade Garbiso (5-12) is the other main starter for ASU as she has started a team high 21 of her 25 appearance. She has allowed 143 runs (102 earned) on 179 hits and has a team high 50 strikeouts, giving her a 6.67 ERA on the year.Â
LAST TIME OUT
UCCS took on #12 Colorado Mesa University last weekend and left Grand Junction with a 1-3 record, meaning the Mountain Lions broke their 18-game losing streak against CMU. UCCS now has a record of 23-24, with a 19-16 RMAC record, giving them the sixth best record in the conference. After being swept on Friday, the Mountain Lions took the first game of the Saturday double header by a score of 7-6. In that game, UCCS recorded 12 hits with three home runs. For the series, the Mountain Lions scored 12 runs on 25 hits including five doubles and five home runs. Those stats bring UCCS' season totals to 375 hits (fifth in the RMAC), 259 runs scored (fifth in the RMAC), 82 doubles (third in the RMAC), 44 home runs (fourth in the RMAC), 250 RBI (third in the RMAC) and a .295 team batting average (eighth in the RMAC).Â
Individually,
Sawyer Brewster (.322 BA) was the standout performer for the Mountain Lions. Brewster recorded four hits (tied for the team high), three of which were home runs that led to a team high five RBI. Two of her three home runs came in UCCS' only win of the series, as did her fourth hit, a go-ahead single in the seventh inning.
Taylor Reidhead (.299 BA) and
Peyton Reisman (.377 BA, leads the team) also had four hits in the series. Reidhead tallied one double and one RBI while Reisman added a home run, one double (14 total, 10
thin the RMAC) and one RBI to her season stats.
Rayle Glover (.373 BA),
Alex Cook (.320 BA) and
Lexi Andersen (.250 BA) all tied for the second most hits of the series with three. Glover added one to her home run total, giving her a team high 10 this season, and had two RBI, the second most on the team for this series. Cook had one double and one RBI while Anderson totaled three singles. Defensively,
Braelyne Crenshaw (8-7) picked up the only win for UCCS in a relief effort of
Taylor Reidhead. After Reidhead had thrown 3 1/3 innings (four earned runs on four hits), Crenshaw came in to throw the final 3 2/3 innings. She allowed only two runs (both earned) on four hits to earn the victory for the Mountain Lions.Â
WEATHER FORECAST
The forecast for this Friday and Saturday shows high temperatures of 71 and 74 degrees for each day respectively. Expect some afternoon thunderstorms on Friday with wind gusts of up to 10 miles per hour. Saturday also shows potential for scattered thunderstorms and winds of up to 10 miles per hour. Next weekend (May 2-4) is the start of the RMAC Tournament for softball. UCCS has clinched a spot in the tournament and will receive their scheduled opponent after the conclusion of the regular season.
