Softball Defeats No. 12 Colorado Mesa in Seventh Inning Rally

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team used a seventh inning rally to come from behind to defeat No. 12 Colorado Mesa University, 7-6, Saturday afternoon.  The Mountain Lions fell in five innings in the series finale, 13-3.

Game One | UCCS 7, CMU 6

Peyton Reisman scored the first run of the game in the first inning with a home run, her second of the season, to start Saturday's action.

Shae Bushey entered the game for UCCS in the top of the second inning and went to work fast, hitting a single up the middle to score Rayle Glover from second base.

After two complete innings, UCCS held the Mavericks to four runners left on base and a 2-0 lead.

Both teams were held in check in the third inning as UCCS sat down all three batters in the second half of the inning.

Sawyer Brewster extended UCCS' lead to 3-0 when she went yard to lead off the fourth inning.

CMU took advantage of a UCCS error and four hits to plate six runs in the fourth inning to snag a 6-3 lead over the Mountain Lions.

Brewster went back to work in the sixth inning when she hit her second home run of the game, this time driving in Glover to cut into the Mavericks lead, 6-5, entering the seventh inning.

With one out in the seventh, Cook started the comeback when she singled to right center field, followed by Reisman's single to shortstop.  Saleen Quinonez relieved Reisman of base running duties before Glover hit a single to plate Cook for the game-tying run.  Brewster notched her fourth RBI of the game with a single to left field that brought home Quinonez for the eventual game-winning run.

UCCS held the Mavericks to one hit and two runners in scoring position to close out the game, 7-6.

Brewster finished the contest going 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored.  Reisman and Glover each notched two hits as Glover toppled on two runs and an RBI.

Taylor Reidhead started in the circle for UCCS, allowing four runs in 3.1 innings and striking out one batter.  Braelyne Crenshaw earned her eighth win of the season, accounting for one strike and holding CMU to two runs on four hits in the final 3.2 innings.

Game Two | CMU 13, UCCS 3 (5 innings)

In the series finale Saturday afternoon, the Mavericks run-ruled UCCS in five innings for the second time in two days.

The Mountain Lions jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top half of the second inning from Glover's lead-off home run, but the lead did not last long.  Four of the Mavericks eight hits in the bottom half were extra base hits, including two home runs as CMU piled on eight runs on eight hits.

UCCS added another run in the third inning to cut into CMU's lead.  Melissa Martinek doubled to left center to reach base, and then advanced to third base on a wild pitch with Cook at the plate.  Cook batted in Martinek on a sacrifice fly for UCCS' second run of the game.

CMU continued with their hot bats in the third inning, adding three runs on four hits for an 11-2 lead after three innings.

Brewster highlighted the game with her third home run of the day, scoring the final run for UCCS.  CMU held UCCS to three-up, three-down for the final outs of the game.

All three of UCCS' hits came from Cook, Glover and Brewster.

Cami Duffey suffered the loss in the circle, surrendering eight runs (four earned) on eight hits in 1.2 innings of action.

UCCS will play their final games of the regular season at home against Adams State University, April 26-27.
