Mountain Lions Downed by No. 12 Mavericks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team was swept by the No. 12 ranked team in the nation, Colorado Mesa University, Friday afternoon in Grand Junction, Colo.  The Mountain Lions lost a 3-1 decision in the series opener, and 9-1 in five innings in game two.

After three scoreless innings in the series opener, the Mavericks plated the first run of the game off a home run in the fourth inning.

UCCS put a run on the board in the sixth inning to knot the game, 1-1.  Alex Cook put herself in scoring position with a double to left center.  Cook crossed home plate two batters later when Taylor Reidhead batted her home for the Mountain Lions lone run of the game.

The Mavericks answered with a two-run triple in the sixth inning to seal the win, 3-1.

Reidhead led UCCS at the plate and in the circle.  She connected for two hits and an RBI on three plate appearances, while fanning four batters and holding CMU to six hits in six innings of work.

In the night cap game, the Mountain Lions were held to three hits and one run in five innings.

UCCS cut into CMU's 4-0 lead in the second inning with one run.  Rayle Glover led off the inning and reached base on a fielding error.  She moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt from Peyton Romines, and scored a run after Leigh Lancaster blasted a shot to right center.

The Mavericks added four more runs in the second inning off three hits to take an 8-1 lead followed by a walk off single in the fifth inning to run-rule UCCS, 9-1.

Cami Duffey started in the circle for UCCS and allowed eight runs (four earned) on seven hits in two innings of work.  Braelyne Crenshaw closed the game, holding CMU to one run and two hits.

Both teams will square off on Saturday for the final two games of series, beginning at 11 a.m. from CMU Softball Stadium.
