Mountain Lions Chart 14-9 Home Win over Griffins

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.  – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's lacrosse team overcame an early two-goal deficit Friday night to Westminster College to chart a 14-9 win at Mountain Lion Stadium. The win marks the fourth conference victory for the Mountain Lions as they improve to 6-6 overall (4-2 RMAC).

Kennedy Travis led the defensive unit making 10 impressive saves in 60 minutes defending the goal, including seven saves in the second half.  Counteracting Travis' dominating defense were three hat tricks from Madison Ellis, Angela Naughton and Brianna Martinez.

After a quick goal by the Griffins in less than 60 seconds of action, Ellis knotted the game at 1-1.  WC struck twice with back-to-back goals to take a 3-1 lead eight minutes into the game.

Natalie Church assisted on goals from Ellis and Kiera Lowe to tie the game for the second time in the half, 3-3.  Eden Freiberg gave WC a 4-3 lead on a free position shot, but it would mark the Griffins last lead of the game as the Mountain Lions roared back to score five unanswered goals to close the half.  Three of UCCS' goals came from playing a player-up as WC received four yellow cards in the first stanza.

UCCS scored five of the first six goals in the second half and took their largest lead of the game, 13-5, with less than 20 minutes to play.  Ellis netted her third goal of the game to start the scoring run, followed by two straight goals from Church and Holly Sodomka's second goal of the season.

Church posted a game high five points behind two goals and three assists.  She also reigned in a game high six draw controls.  Naughton and Martinez each attempted seven shots, while four of Lowe's six attempts landed on goal.

Defensively, Ellie O'Brien picked up five ground balls and caused two of the team's seven turnovers.

UCCS attempted 20 shots in each half to outshoot WC, 40-25.  The Griffins edged UCCS in ground balls, 26-24, but the Mountain Lions won 17 of the draw controls.

The Mountain Lions will travel to No. 9 Regis University on Thursday, April 18 before playing host to No. 3 Lindenwood University on Saturday at 11 a.m.
