LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team opened the weekend with two games in Las Vegas, N.M. against New Mexico Highlands University and MSU Denver. The Mountain Lions fell to the Cowgirls in five innings, 10-2, and to the Roadrunners, 9-2.
Game 1 vs. N.M. Highlands
The Mountain Lions were down early against host team New Mexico Highlands after the Cowgirls jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first inning.
Payton Romines drove in the Mountain Lions lone run of the game in the third inning when she singled to the left side to score
Rayle Glover.
NMHU finished the game with two runs in the third and four in the fifth inning to run-rule UCCS, 10-1.
Melissa Martinek and
Peyton Reisman each tallied two hits against the Cowgirls.
Taylor Reidhead started in the circle for the Mountain Lions and struck out three batters. She gave up eight hits and six runs (two earned).
Cami Duffey pitched the final two innings, surrendering four runs on six hits.
Game 2 vs. MSU Denver
Against the Roadrunners, Reisman singled in the top of the first inning that scored Glover from second base. MSU Denver knotted the game in the bottom half of the inning and took a 2-1 lead after a one-run score in the second inning.
UCCS tied the game in the third inning, 2-2, when Reisman and Glover connected again for a score. Reisman tallied a double to right centerfield that scored Glover for the Mountain Lions second and final run of the game.
MSU Denver retook the lead in the fourth inning and combined to score seven runs in the next three innings.
UCCS collected six hits from five batters against MSU Denver. Reisman led the Mountain Lions at the plate with two hits and two RBI while earning six putouts at first base.
Braelyne Crenshaw worked 3.2 innings for the Mountain Lions and struck out one batter. Duffey entered again in relief, adding one strike out.
UCCS (11-10, 7-2 RMAC) will face MSU Denver on Sunday at 12 p.m., followed by the final game of the pod weekend against NMHU at 2 p.m.
