COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's lacrosse team needed all eight second half goals to hold off the Illinois Wesleyan University Titans Monday evening at Mountain Lion Stadium, 13-12. Tonight's win improves the Mountain Lions to 3-3 on the season.
Angela Naughton scored the first goal of the game on a free position shot less that four minutes from the first draw control, but the Titans answered and rattled off four straight goals to take a 4-1 lead.
The Mountain Lions, who trailed by one goal at halftime, 6-5, would not lead the Titans again until the 32nd minute.
Kiera Lowe opened the second half with a goal in the first 24 seconds to knot the game at 6-6.
Natalie Church found the back of the net on a free position shot, giving UCCS their second lead of the game, 7-6, with 28:38 left in regulation.
Lowe would go on to score three of her four goals in the game within a five-minute span in the second half. After Church's go-ahead goal, Lowe and
Vanessa Nelson scored the next three goals to give UCCS their largest lead of the game, 10-6.
The Titans notched their first goal of the second half from Dani Englebreit in the 38th minute before Church found
Madison Ellis to boost UCCS' lead back to four, 11-7.
IWU's Landry Elliott and Naughton traded goals, but the Titans stormed back to score four of the last five goals in the game, including the final three goals. UCCS thwarted the upset, holding the Titans scoreless in the final three and a half minutes.
Kennedy Travis earned the win in goal, making seven saves in 60 minutes.
Lowe and Naughton each scored eight goals and combined for 12 shots. Church chipped in two goals, an assist, four shots and won a game high six draw controls.
Ellie O'Brien scooped up five ground balls as UCCS edged IWU in ground balls, 26-24.
The Mountain Lions also held a 31-23 advantage in shot attempts and won 17 of the 27 draw controls. UCCS will play host to Colorado State-Pueblo on Thursday at 5 p.m.
