Softball Takes Three from Eagles; Win Two Games in Walk off Fashion

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team kept their home record perfect through seven games this season after taking all three games on Friday from Chadron State College at Mountain Lion Field.  The Mountain Lions won game one, 6-2, followed by a 5-4 win after Taylor Reidhead walk off double, and a six inning win in game three, 13-5.  Meghan Waidler sealed the run-rule decision with a walk off single in game three.

The wins improve UCCS to 11-8 on the season.  They are on a seven-game winning streak with all seven wins coming on their home field and in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games.

In the series opener, CSC took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Mountain Lions charted two runs in the bottom half to take a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.  Melissa Martinek led off the inning and reached base on an error.  She reached third base from a double by Alex Cook and scored UCCS' first run of the game from Rayle Glover's RBI.  Payton Romines brought in the second run of the game after she doubled to right center to score Cook.

Martinek expanded the Mountain Lions lead to four runs, 5-1, when she went yard over the left field fence to score Leigh Lancaster and Amanda Nobles in the second inning.

Catcher Lexi Andersen added an insurance run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly that plated Romines for UCCS' final score of the game.

In the top of the fifth inning and a runner on first base, Martinek connected with Glover and Peyton Reisman to turn a double play and hold the Eagles hitless in an inning for the third time of the game.

The Eagles added one run in the seventh to bring the final score to 6-2.

Reidhead pitched all seven innings, allowing one earned run on seven hits and fanning five batters.  The win marked Reidhead's fourth of the season in the circle.

UCCS posted nine hits against the Eagles, led by Reisman's two singles and a double.  Five of UCCS' nine hits were extra base hits with four doubles and a home run. Martinek finished with three RBI and two runs scored on two hits.  Both hits went for extra bases (home run, double).

In the second game of Friday's tripleheader, the Mountain Lions headed into the bottom of the seventh inning trailing by one run, 4-3.

Reidhead put UCCS on the scoreboard first with a two-run home run in the first inning.  CSC scored a run in the second inning but UCCS took back the two-run lead in the third inning.  Glover stepped up to the plate with two outs and hit a single home run for a 3-1 lead.

CSC added one run in the fourth inning and grabbed a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning after hitting two solo home runs.

The Mountain Lions were held scoreless on three hits in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but came on strong in the seventh inning to post the 5-4 win.  Sawyer Brewster made her first appearance of the game when she led off the seventh inning as a pinch hitter for Nobles and drew a walk.  After reaching first base, Nobles took over base-running duties for Brewster.

The next two batters for UCCS amassed two outs before Glover hit a double up the middle.  With two runners in scoring position and two outs, Reidhead doubled to left center for the walk off double.

Glover and Reidhead each earned three hits.  Glover crossed home plate twice while Reidhead batted in four runs and scored once while also drawing a walk.  Glover and Reidhead each tallied a double and a home run in game two.

Braelyne Crenshaw pitched the first six innings, allowing four runs on nine hits.  Cami Duffey entered the circle in the seventh inning to earn the win, surrendering just one hit and no walks.

The Mountain Lions put game three away in six innings, thanks to two four-run innings.

To start the game, Reidhead grounded out to third base but scored Martinek before Resiman plated Glover and Saleen Quinonez for a 3-1 lead after one inning of action.

Duffey and the UCCS defense held the Eagles to three-up, three-down in the second and third innings, while Glover added an RBI in the second to give UCCS a 4-1 lead.

The Mountain Lions lead grew to six runs after they scored four in the fourth inning to take an 8-2 lead.  Quinonez' double to left field scored Martinek and Nobles.  The next batter, Glover, hit her second home run of the day that brought in Quinonez.

Chadron State cut into the Mountain Lions lead, 8-5, in the fifth inning after scoring three runs on three hits and a UCCS error.

Sierra Batchelor scored one run in the fifth inning before the Mountain Lions piled on four runs in the sixth inning.  The inning started with Glover leading off with a single home run.  Romines copied Glover for another single home run.  White stepped to the plate with runners on first and second and hit a double to left center that scored Cook for a 12-5 Mountain Lion lead.  Waidler, who was making her first appearance of the game, came to the plate as a pinch hitter for Nobles and singled down the left field line to score Romines for the win.

UCCS accumulated 14 hits and drew six walks against the Eagles in game three.  Glover went 4-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored.  Quinonez notched two hits, two RBI and scored twice, while Reisman drove in two runs on one hit.

Duffey recorded her second straight win, allowing five runs on 10 hits.

In three games today, the Mountain Lions compiled 32 hits, scored 24 runs, hit nine doubles, six home runs and drew nine walks.

Reisman led the defense with 26 putouts without committing an error at first base.  Romines added six putouts and assisted on 14 from her third base position.

Glover and Reidhead led the offense.  Glover went 7-for-11 with five runs scored, three home runs and six RBI, while Reidhead tabulated four hits, six RBI, two home runs and scored twice.

Both teams are scheduled to close the series Saturday morning for a single game at 10 a.m.
