COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Down by 19 points with 11:46 left in regulation, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's basketball team exploded to outscore Chadron State College by nearly 30 points Saturday night to close out the game and post a 10-point win. The Mountain Lions defeated the Eagles at home, 97-87.
The win improves the Mountain Lions record to 14-9 overall and 11-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. UCCS is in a three-way tie for fourth place with New Mexico Highlands University and Dixie State University.
Isaiah Wilson led UCCS on a 24-8 run in the second half. Down 67-48, Wilson made four field goals and two layups for 10 points over the span of seven minutes.
Dalton Walker added a three-pointer and made three straight free throws after getting fouled on a three-point attempt.
Wilson's layup at 4:50 trimmed the Eagles lead down to three points, 75-72. Jacob Jefferson of CSC followed with a layup on the next possession. The Mountain Lions next two possessions forced CSC to foul UCCS.
Padiet Wang and Wilson each made both of their free throw attempts to bring UCCS within three points again, 79-76.
DaRaun Clark tied the game at 79-79 with 2:56 remaining in regulation after
Ian MacDonald found Clark for a three-pointer. A scuffle following the three-pointer resulted in two assistant coaches from both teams and two players from CSC getting ejected from the game. Walker was sent to the free throw line to shoot four free throws from technicals assessed to the Eagles. Walker made 3-of-4 attempts to give the Mountain Lions an 82-80 lead they would not relinquish.
In the final 2:56 of action, the Mountain Lions outscored Chadron State, 17-7. Wang accounted for eight of UCCS' final 10 points, including six straight free throws. UCCS attempted 16 free throws in the final 2:56, making all but two.
UCCS was led by Walker's 24 points. Walker hit three treys and made 11-of-12 from the charity stripe. Wilson came off the bench to net 21 points on 7-of-12 field goals and 7-of-8 free throws.
Thirteen of Wang's 19 points came from the free throw line. He added seven assists and three rebounds.
Clark led both teams with seven rebounds to go with his 12 points, two blocked shots and two steals. Both of Clark's blocks came in the last three minutes of action, including a blocked three-point attempt with 14 ticks left.
UCCS shot the ball at a 47.4 percent rate (27-of-57) and 85.7 percent from the free throw line (36-of-42).
CSC was solid from the floor, making 34-of-67 attempts, including 7-of-15 from three-point range.
The Mountain Lions will close out their home portion of the regular season Feb. 15-16 against Colorado State-Pueblo and New Mexico Highlands University.
