COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Playing in their first road game of the season, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's lacrosse team lost an 18-13 decision to No. 21 Colorado College Wednesday afternoon at Stewart Field.
Sydney Malcolm found the back of the net less than two minutes into the game to give UCCS a 1-0 lead. CC tied the game at 25:53 and scored again 37 seconds later to take a 2-1 lead.
Madison Ellis tied the match at 2-2 on a free position shot at 24:29.
Vanessa Nelson and
Brianna Martinez scored back-to-back goals to give UCCS their second lead of the game, 4-3, with 21:36 left in the first half.
Tied at 5-5 on Nelson's second goal of the game, the Tigers went on four-goal scoring spree and outscored the Mountain Lions 6-2 to close out the first half.
Both teams combined for 18 goals and 39 shot attempts in the first half.
Down by five goals at the start of the second half, 12-7, UCCS started a comeback with goals from
Mallory Corrigan, Malcolm and
Kiera Lowe to cut the deficit down to two, 12-10. CC responded to outscore the Mountain Lions 5-1 in the next 11 minutes, posting a 17-11 lead. Corrigan and
Natalie Church each netted a goal in the final 2:20 of regulation, before CC sealed the win, 18-13, with three seconds remaining.
Naughton led the Mountain Lions offense with five points after scoring twice and assisting on three other goals. She also led UCCS with seven shots and four shots on goal.
Church and
Emma Becker combined for nine of UCCS' 21 ground balls, Church chipped in seven draw controls.
Emma Becker made four saves and allowed seven goals in the first 18 minutes.
Kennedy Travis finished the game between the posts, stopping 10 shots on goal and allowing 11 goals.
Fifteen of the Mountain Lions 28 shot attempts came in the second half. UCCS was outshot, 38-28, but won 21 of 33 draw controls. The Mountain Lions were successful on 12 of 28 clear attempts. Conversely, the Tigers were successfully on 20-of-25 attempts.
Nine cards were handed out between the two teams with the Mountain Lions receiving four.
UCCS will return to Mountain Lion Stadium to play host to #11 University of Tampa on Monday, March 4 at 5 p.m.
