COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Playing in their first home series of the 2019 season, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team completed the series sweep over Colorado State University-Pueblo Monday afternoon. UCCS (8-8, 4-0 RMAC) took game one, 6-0, followed by an 8-3 win in game two. The Mountain Lions opened the series on Sunday, earning two wins by scores of 11-3 (six innings) and 15-5 (five innings).
Braelyne Crenshaw posted a complete game shutout on Monday, holding the ThunderWolves to six hits. Crenshaw struck out four batters while the Mountain Lions defense held the Pack to all singles and held eight runners on base.
The Mountain Lions were scoreless until the fourth inning when
Peyton Reisman singled up the middle to score
Payton Romines from second base.
Melissa Martinek's double in the fifth inning brought home
Sierra Batchelor to give UCCS a 2-0 lead. Martinek sealed the win for UCCS in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs and bases load, Martinek hit a grand slam to score Batchelor,
Amanda Nobles and Reisman.
UCCS' defense held the Pack to one hit in the top of the seventh. The Mountain Lions secured the final out of the game on a runner's interference between second and third base.
Both of Martinek's hits were extra base hits as she finished with five RBI and one run scored. Reisman went 3-for-3 with a run batted in and a run scored while making eight putouts at first base.
Taylor Reidhead led UCCS in the series final, working all seven innings in the circle, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits while sitting down eight batters. At the plate, she collected three hits on three at-bats and drove in four runs.
UCCS jumped out to a 2-0 start in the first inning.
Rayle Glover notched one of her four hits in the game when she went yard to score Martinek.
The Mountain Lions chipped in three more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Glover started the inning with a triple to right field. She scored when the next batter, Reidhead, singled to left field. Batchelor entered the game to pinch run for Reidhead and crossed home plate on Romines' home run, her third homer in two days.
UCCS' lead grew to 7-0 in the fourth inning. With two outs after the first two batters went to the plate,
Alex Cook started a three-hit streak when she singled to center field, followed by Glover's single. Both runners advanced to second and third base on a wild pitch and scored runs from Reidhead's single to left field.
Two errors by the Mountain Lions defense led to the ThunderWolves scoring two runs in the fifth inning. In the bottom half of the inning, Reidhead notched her fourth RBI of the game when she brought home Martinek.
Glover registered a hit in all four plate appearances, scoring three times and driving in two runs.
The Mountain Lions will remain at home next weekend, March 2-3, when they play host to Chadron State College in a four-game series.
