Lacrosse Falls to No. 8 Regis University, 18-9

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Playing in their second game of the season, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's lacrosse team fell to No. 8 Regis University in a non-conference match Saturday afternoon at Mountain Lion Stadium, 18-9.
 
The Rangers struck first when Sarah Myres scored on a free position shot in the fifth minute of the game.  Seven minutes later Vanessa Nelson scored her sixth goal of the season from Kiera Lowe's assist, before the Rangers rattled off four straight goals.
 
Sydney Malcolm found the back of the net for the first time this season on a free position shot with 1:53 left in the first half, but Regis closed the half with a goal just 23 seconds left to take a 6-2 lead into halftime.
 
Less than two minutes into the second half, Angela Naughton scored her first goal of the game to bring UCCS within three, 6-3. 
 
Trailing 13-3, Lowe stopped the running clock with UCCS' fourth goal of the game at 17:46.  Thirty seconds later Brianna Martinez netted her fourth goal of the game.  After a yellow card was assessed to the Rangers, Martinez scored again at 14:49 to cut into the Rangers lead, 13-6. 
 
Down by 11 goals with 7:20 left to play (17-6), UCCS tallied three straight goals by Naughton (two goals) and Audrey Napp.  The Rangers fired off one more goal at 1:08 to end the game with an 18-9 win.
 
Naughton led the offensive attack for UCCS with three goals and six shots.  Martinez added two goals, an assist and four shots.
 
Ellie O'Brien picked up a game high seven ground balls, while Nelson won five draw controls.
 
Emma Becker played the first 38 minutes in goal, making seven saves and allowing 11 goals.
 
Regis possessed the ball the majority of the second half, attempting 19 shots and scoring 12 of their 18 goals. 
 
Both teams combined for 25 clear attempts in the first half, but only 12 total in the second half.
 
UCCS closed the game attempting 21 shots and picked up 16 ground balls.  RU won 18 of the 29 draw controls.
 
The Mountain Lions were successful on all three man-up attempts and on 16-of-18 clear attempts.
 
UCCS will travel across town to take on Colorado College on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 3 p.m.
