Ross Eclipses 1,000 Points in Loss to Yellow Jackets

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Senior guard Elijah Ross nailed a three-pointer with 4:27 left in regulation, sinking his 1,000th career point for the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's basketball program.  The Mountain Lions ran out of time in Spearfish, S.D., falling to Black Hills State University, 79-76.
 
UCCS overcame a 13-point deficit in the second half to take a two-point lead.  The Mountain Lions used six minutes to outscore BHSU 17-2.  Dalton Walker led the comeback with nine points and was joined by Blend Avdili and Ross who added treys.  Padiet Wang chipped in four points with two free throws and a layup.
 
The Mountain Lions were down again by 13 points with 5:43 left in regulation and came within two points, 78-76, but ran out of time with 25 seconds remaining.
 
Ross started the comeback after scoring 10 straight points for UCCS, six of which were three-pointers.  Avdili and Wang added two buckets from downtown followed by the final four points recorded by Ross. 
 
The Mountain Lions last basket came with 25 seconds remaining to bring UCCS within two points, 78-76.  A quick foul by UCCS sent BHSU's Dez Stoudamire to the line where he made 1-of-2 free throws to finish the game.
 
Ross led all scorers with 22 points, 17 of which came in the second half.  He netted four three-pointers and added four rebounds.
 
Walker notched 13 points and four caroms, as Wang chipped in 12 points, three assists and seven rebounds.
 
UCCS held a 39-32 rebound advantage and edged the Yellow Jackets on second chance points, 12-9.
 
The Mountain Lions (17-10, 14-7 RMAC) will travel to Golden, Colo. on Friday, March 1 to take on Colorado School of Mines in the last game of the regular season.
