COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Competing in the first game of the 2019 season, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's lacrosse program dominated Adams State University Saturday afternoon at Mountain Lion Stadium, 24-1.
The 23-goal win is the largest margin of victory in the Mountain Lions three-year history of the program. The 24 goals scored are the second most in program history, three shy of last year's 27 goals at Palm Beach Atlantic on Feb. 17, 2018.
UCCS attempted 55 shots against the Grizzlies, crushing the previous record of 46. Thirty-five of UCCS' shots came in the first half, as did 18 of their 24 goals.
Ten different Mountain Lions found the back of the net, including eight players with multiple goals, and three players with hat tricks.
Vanessa Nelson led both teams with five goals. Nelson netted the first goal of the game at 26:34 and the rest was all UCCS. The Mountain Lions scored seven goals in the ensuing four minutes and jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the 16
th minute from
Angela Naughton's free position goal.
Adams State prevented the shutout with 12:33 left in the first half when Savannah Penland put ASU on the board, 12-1.
The Mountain Lions put the brakes on in the second half, attempting only 20 shots and netting six goals.
Madison Ellis,
Brianna Martinez and
Kiera Lowe joined the hat trick club for today's game, scoring three goals each.
Martinez and Nelson paced the offensive unit with seven shots each.
Natalie Church assisted on four goals and found the back of the net once for five points. Church tallied a game high seven draw controls.
The Mountain Lions defense was stout, stopping the Grizzlies on 10 of their 15 clear attempts and picking up 14 ground balls. UCCS forced ASU to commit 23 turnovers, 14 of which came in the first half.
Emma Becker earned the win between the posts, stopping three shots on goal in 30 minutes of action.
Kennedy Travis defended the goal in the second half, stopping one shot on goal.
UCCS will play host to No. 8 Regis University on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m.
