LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team narrowly missed out on earning their first win of the conference season, but the Mountain Lions were held off by Colorado Christian University, 70-65, Saturday night in Lakewood, Colo.
The Mountain Lions (1-9, 0-4 RMAC), who led CCU for more than 25 minutes, tied the game at 65-65 with 2:52 left in regulation after
Desiree Pierson's layup.
Nearly a minute of scoreless basketball by both teams, the Cougars snagged the ball out of the Mountain Lions front court, leading to a three-pointer by CCU's Sam Nunez with 69 ticks left. Forced to foul the Cougars, CCU made 2-of-4 free throws in the last minute while holding UCCS without a field goal on five attempts to take the win.
Abby Feickert drilled five three-pointers as part of her team high 23 points. Feickert, who pulled in four rebounds, made 7-of-14 from the floor and 4-of-5 free throws.
Anna Davern bagged a team high six rebounds to go with her four points, while
Elly Johnson chipped in seven points and five rebounds.
The Mountain Lions shot 36.4 percent from the floor (24-of-66) and 11-of-17 from the charity stripe (64.7 percent). UCCS dominated the Cougars on the boards, pulling in 39 rebounds, including a 17-5 advantage on the offensive glass which led to 11 second chance points for the Mountain Lions.
UCCS will play their third straight road game when they travel to Colorado School of Mines on Saturday, Dec. 21.
