Mountain Lions Head to RMAC Quarterfinals and Face No. 1 Seed Regis University

The University of Colorado Colorado Springs Mountain Lions play in the RMAC Quarterfinals tonight on the road against the No. 1 seed, Regis University.

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Mountain Lions had their Senior Night last Friday night.  The team honored six seniors, Lauren Brown, Grace Nelson, Raylenn Edge, Anabela Cagen, Aly Morgan, and Taylor Smith.  UCCS lost their final regular season match to Colorado School of Mines in a three set match despite the Mountain Lions forcing 17 errors on the Orediggers.  The Mountain Lions defense worked hard achieving 11 blocks for the match, but CSM's .306 hitting percentage helped them win in the end.

 

The Series

  • The Mountain Lions played the Regis Rangers twice earlier this year.  Once at home in September and again in October at RU. UCCS' series record against RU is 7-39.
     

Scouting Report

  • The Rangers take the No. 1 spot in the RMAC with their 17-1 RMAC record (24-3).

  • Kristen Hornung received her second award as RMAC Defensive Player of the Week this weekend.  She is also ranked second in the RMAC in hitting percentage with an average .391 and sixth for blocks with 1.11 a set.

  • Nikki Kennedy backs Hornung up offensively and defensively at No. 7 for hitting percentage (.318) and No. 4 in blocks (1.15/set).
     

Hot Takes

  • UCCS is currently tied No. 8 in the RMAC with Chadron State College with an 8-10 conference record and 10-16 overall record.

  • Grace Nelson remains in the top 10 for hitting percentage with a .303 average as well as No. 10 for kills averaging 4.16/set.

  • Jordyn Kinsey stays ranked in the top 10 in the RMAC for digs averaging 4.16 a set.
     

UCCS Under Head Coach Chrissy Elder

  • Coach Chrissy Elder recorded her 100-win milestone mark on Oct. 25 at Colorado Christian University.  An interim head coach in 2006 at Missouri-Kansas City where she went 7-23, she has garnered 94 wins at UCCS (94-96), including three winning seasons.  In her eighth year as a head coach, Elder has a 101-118 record.

  • Elder has led the Mountain Lions to the RMAC Tournament for six seasons, and has coached 19 all-conference and 38 academic all-conference performers.

  • Elder came to UCCS from the University of Central Missouri where she was a member of a coaching staff that lead the Jennies to the NCAA Division II national semifinals in 2010 and the national quarterfinals in 2011.  She joined the staff in 2007 as an assistant coach before she was promoted to Head Assistant Coach in 2009. Prior to joining the staff at Central Missouri, Elder was the interim head coach for the University of Missouri-Kansas City.  She joined the Kangaroo staff as a graduate assistant coach in 2005. Elder finished her collegiate playing career at Pittsburg State University, where she also doubled as a student assistant coach for the Gorillas in her senior season.  She was an All-American and All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association setter. In 2005, Elder earned her bachelor's degree in recreation and fitness management from Pittsburg State, and in 2008 she went on to earn her master's degree from UMKC.

 

Upcoming Matches

  • The winner of tonight's quarterfinal match will play the winner between No. 4 Colorado School of Mines and No. 5 Colorado Mesa University.

  • The highest remaining seed following tonight's quarterfinal round will host the Final Four.
