Men's Soccer Falls to MSU Denver On The Road, 1-0

DENVER, Colo. – On Friday, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team traveled to Denver, Colo. where they fell to Metropolitan State University Denver 1-0 inside MSU Regency Athletic Complex.

UCCS (5-8-1, 4-7-0 RMAC) had a tough time recovering from an early MSU Denver (7-7-1, 5-5-1 RMAC) goal in the first half as the Roadrunners came away with the shutout win. Despite holding the advantage in shots 14-12, shots on goal 5-4, and corner kicks 8-3, the Mountain Lions were held out of net with the Roadrunners taking the advantage in saves as MSU Denver goalkeeper Alessandro Gentile bagged five saves. Senior Alex VonHolle led the team in offense with four shots and two shots on goal, with Adam Baldwin and Kolby Raineri each recording three shots.

In a match that was only decided by a single score, it was the Mountain Lions who applied the pressure early as they posted five shots over the span of 90 seconds from the 3:25 mark to the 5:04 mark with two of those shots landing on frame.

After surviving a spurt of UCCS offense, the Roadrunners flipped the field in the eighth minute where MSU Denver's Danny Bautista connected with Jerry Gutierrez for a shot that broke the scoreless tie from 15 yards out and gave the Roadrunners a 1-0 lead.

UCCS landed two more shots on goal before the end of the first half but was unable to come away with the equalizer.

Both defenses buckled down in the second half as total shots (17-to-9) and total shots on goal (6-to-3) decreased from the first half, with the Mountain Lions posting one last shot on goal in the 71st minute that Gentile snagged. UCCS attempted to generate scoring opportunities with five of their eight corner kicks coming in the second half but the Roadrunner defense stepped in to disrupt those opportunities as MSU Denver held on for the 1-0 win.

With Friday's loss, UCCS currently sits on the outside looking in with 12 conference points in the RMAC standings. The Mountain Lions have three matches remaining as they sit in ninth place with Dixie State University holding down the sixth spot with 18 conference points.

UCCS will aim to bounce back on Sunday, Oct. 27 as they travel back to the Denver area to take on Colorado Christian University for a 1 p.m. match.
