Men's Soccer downs CSU-Pueblo 4-1 to complete the weekend sweep

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer bested both Colorado State University – Pueblo (CSUP) and the weather in a hard-fought game on Sunday. After battling extreme windy conditions, UCCS came home with a dominant 4-1 victory.

UCCS (5-7-1, 4-6-0 RMAC) outshot CSUP (5-9-0, 5-5-0 RMAC) 15-8 in the game, including 8-3 in shots on goal. Mario Mandel led the offense for UCCS as both of his shots resulted in goals for the Mountain Lions, while Kolby Raineri tallied three shots (two on goal) and Liam McGuire, Alex VonHolle and Adam Baldwin all registered two shots and one shot on goal.

It was clear from the start that the wind was going to seriously affect how the game was played, and it did as all five goals in the game were scored on the south goal of Mountain Lion Stadium.

In the first half, both teams were struggling to get any rhythm as the wind was a major hardship. However, CSUP was able to get a decent look off a corner kick and take a 1-0 lead on a goal scored by Daniel Himmelsbach. UCCS was unable to respond and the half would end with the score 1-0.

The second half was a completely different story as coach Brian Miller and the Mountain Lions came out aggressive. It paid off early as UCCS was able to tie the game not even one minute into the half as Baldwin found the net for his first goal of the season, assist to VonHolle, making the score 1-1. Less than two minutes later, Mandel scored his first goal of the season off an assist from Samuel Gomez to give UCCS a 2-1 lead in the 47th minute.

The Mountain Lions were not done as Raineri was able to get behind the CSUP defense and score after putting a fantastic move on the keeper, making the score 3-1 UCCS. Then, just for good measure, Mandel was able to put his second shot of the game in the net to seal the victory for the Mountain Lions by a score of 4-1.

Despite the less than ideal conditions, UCCS was able to score a season high four goals in their most effective offensive performance of the season.

The Mountain Lions are back in action next weekend as they will be on the road. On Friday, October 25, UCCS will be in Denver, Colo. taking on Metropolitan State University – Denver at 3 p.m. On Sunday, October 27, UCCS will be in Lakewood, Colo. taking on Colorado Christian University at 1 p.m.
