GOLDEN, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer team was put to the test on Friday night but came away on top as they defeated No. 14 Colorado School of Mines 2-1 in a double overtime thriller in Stermole Soccer Stadium.
No. 1 UCCS (13-0-0, 9-0-0 RMAC) and No. 14 Colorado School of Mines (11-2-1, 7-1-1 RMAC) faced off for a top-25 match to remember as the Orediggers came to hold the advantage in shots 15-9, shots on goal 7-6, and corner kicks 5-4, with the Mountain Lions having the final word in the 2-1 score. Shanade Hopcroft each netted a goal on Friday with Hopcroft walking away with a perfect shot on goal percentage (3 shots-3 SOG) on the evening. Along with their defensive efforts,
Caitlin Esterle and
Mitsy Ramirez each added a shot in the contest with Ramirez also adding a shot on frame.
The number one team in the country found themselves in an unfamiliar position in Golden, Colo. as Colorado School of Mines made a statement early with a goal in the 15
th minute, making it the first time that the Mountain Lions have trailed all season long. CSM then held UCCS to just two shots in the first half to walk into half time with the 1-0 lead.
With their back against the wall, the Mountain Lions answered right out of the gate in the second half as Mills hit the equalizer in the 46
th minute to bring the score even 1-1.
Neither team let the other budge after the UCCS equalizer as both defenses went to work for the remainder of the half. The Mountain Lions gave up four shots and just two shots on goal with the Orediggers allowing three shots on goal and one shot to take the game into overtime.
In overtime, all the offense would belong to CSM as they out-shot UCCS 4-0, but the Mountain Lion backline shut it down to force double overtime.
At the blow of the whistle in the second overtime period, the number one scoring offense in the region put the game to rest as UCCS'
Kaitlin Hinkle and
Tanner Sanders connected with the leading goal scorer Hopcroft to seal the game with the golden goal at the 100:31 mark.

Mollee Swift records the biggest win to date in her young collegiate career as she registered six clutch saves for the Mountain Lions, a new career high in the black & gold. Swift remains undefeated on the season as she slides up to the double-digit win mark of 10-0-0.
UCCS now extends their conference point count to 27 and becomes the first team to clinch a spot in this year's RMAC Tournament. UCCS handed CSM their first conference lost of the season as the Orediggers now sit in second place with 22 points in the conference standings.
After a huge key conference win over Colorado school of Mines on Friday night, the Mountain Lions now set their site to Sunday, Oct. 20 as they face Colorado Christian University for a 1 p.m. match.
