COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer team jumps to 12-0-0 on the season with a dominating 6-1 win over Adams State University on Sunday afternoon at Mountain Lion Stadium.
The undefeated No. 1 Mountain Lions (12-0-0, 8-0-0) spread the ball out nicely on Sunday as six different Mountain Lions found the back of the net, with
Katie Puchino,
Jaden Davis, and
Mitsy Ramirez recording their first goals of the season. Sophomore
Savannah Mills led the team in shots as UCCS out-shot Adams State (3-7-0, 1-6-0 RMAC) by an astounding 32-4, with half of those Mountain Lion shots landing on frame (16).
It didn't take long for UCCS to break the scoreless tie with Sanders assisting Puchino in the 4
th minute to put the Mountain Lions up on the board first, 1-0. Senior defender
Aleesa Muir made another appearance on the scoring side of the ball as Muir put a chip shot towards the far side of the net where freshman
Kaitlin Hinkle finished it for a 2-0 UCCS lead in the 23
rd minute. Not even a minute later, a freshman to freshman connection from
Taeya Schueppert to
Nicolette Sandoval brought the score to 3-0 after the first 45 minutes of play.
Adams State put up two shots in the first half, with both of those shots landing on frame. The Mountain Lions came to record 20 shots in the first half, as UCCS held the advantage 9-0 in corner kicks.
In the second half, the Mountain Lions picked up right where they left off in the first half as Davis took on a 1-on-1 on the far sideline where she dribbled to about a yard off the goal line and delivered ball a that bended inside the far post for a 4-0 lead in the 47
th minute. About 30 second later, Mills sped in to cause a turnover off the Adams State kick-off where she ended up getting fouled in the box, setting up a UCCS penalty kick. Sanders was sent in to take the PK as she capitalized on the opportunity, netting a goal to bring her points to a team leading three, and registering a 5-0 UCCS lead.
The Grizzlies bounced back with a goal of their own in the 49
th minute as an ASU corner kick placed the ball in front of goal where it would be batted around until Zoe Moses knocked it in for the Grizzly score.
At the 67:09 mark, the Mountain Lions pulled away as Ramirez lined up for a free kick near the 35-yard line where she buried it for the final 6-1 score.
Freshman goalkeeper
Mollee Swift made plays in and out of frame as she came away with two saves and brought her record up to a perfect 9-0-0 on the season.
No. 1 UCCS remains in the driver's seat in the conference as they sit in first with 36 points, and 24 conference points. But the Mountain Lions come up on a big match-up next weekend as they travel to Golden, Colo. to take on No. 16 Colorado School of Mines who currently sits in second place in the RMAC with an 11-1-1 record, 7-0-1 conference record, 34 points, and 22 conference points. UCCS and CSM will face-ff on Friday, Oct. 18 at 5 p.m. inside the Stermole Soccer Stadium.
