Mountain Lions Maul Fort Lewis 5-0 on Friday Night

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women' soccer team is off to their best start in program history as they blow out Fort Lewis College at a final score of 5-0 inside Mountain Lion Stadium on Friday night.

No. 1 UCCS (11-0-0, 7-0-0 RMAC) more than doubled Fort Lewis' (3-4-2, 2-2-2 RMAC) shots and shots on goal as the Mountain Lions out-shot the SkyHawks 19-8 and 10-4 respectively. Fort Lewis had no answer for the Mountain Lions' attack as Shanade Hopcroft, Savannah Mills, and Aleesa Muir all had three shots, with freshman Taeya Schueppert leading the offensive charge with four shots and four shots on goal. Mills led the number one team in the country in points on Friday night as she netted two goals for four points, doubling her season goal count to four. Hopcroft continues to lead the team in assists as she recorded two points off two assists. Muir had a stellar match on both sides of the ball as she anchored a backline that registered their seventh shutout of the season, while also tallying three points from an assist and a goal.

The opening 45 minutes saw three Mountain Lion goals as Muir placed a ball in front of goal from 25 yards out to give Mills an easy chip shot inside the far post for a 1-0 UCCS lead in the first two minutes of the match. Later in the 25th minute, the Mountain Lions increased their lead to 2-0 as Muir found herself on the other side of a score with Hopcroft connecting on Muir's second goal of the season. To end the first half, Kendall Stevenson streaked down the center of the field to provide a perfect through ball that hit Katlin Hinkle in stride for a 3-0 lead in the 41st minute.

After holding Fort Lewis to a scoreless first half, the Mountain Lions keep their streak alive of not allowing a goal in the first half this season.

In the second half, UCCS tamed Fort Lewis by holding them to six shots as the Mountain Lions tacked on two goals towards the end of the half. Mills added her second goal of the game off a Hopcroft assist in the 81st minute, then Tanner Sanders put the game away by threading a ball from the near corner to the inside of the far post for the 5-0 win.

Sophomore Alexis Walker stood strong in frame for UCCS as she recorded her third win and her second shutout of the season. Walker put a stop to every shot on frame as she tied her season high in saves with four.

The No. 1 ranked Mountain Lions will now host Adams State University on Sunday, Oct. 13 for a 12 p.m. match at Mountain Lion Stadium.
