Mountain Lions Fight Off Dixie State to Win 3-2

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Despite a second half push by Dixie State in Friday night's conference match, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team held off the Trailblazers in a 3-2 victory to give them their first conference win of the season.

Sam Bonano and Corey Carabajal wasted no time as UCCS jumped ahead to a quick 1-0 lead, as Bonano connected with Carabajal to record his first assist of the season, and bring Carabajal to four goals on the year. UCCS struck again in the 9th minute as Haiko Hovak found Jack Mills from 15 yards out to place themselves in a quick 2-0 lead in less than 10 minutes of the match. The Mountain Lions would not be finished as Alex VonHolle recorded his second score of the season off a penalty kick in the 28th minute.

With the first half being all UCCS, Dixie State came out in the second half to make a strong push and bring the match within one score. Redshirt junior Gustavo Ortega recorded his first two goals of the season with scores in the 53rd and 60th minute to bring the score to 3-2.  After allowing two scores in the late minutes of the second half, freshman goalkeeper Marco Seyfert recorded two saves as the Mountain Lions back line closed out the match to hold the one goal lead.

Seyfert made his first start Friday night as he recorded four saves and held the advantage over Dixie State in saves 4-2. The Trailblazers out-shot UCCS 17-9 and held the advantage in corner kicks 6-2.

The Mountain Lions stay on the road as they visit Colorado Mines Sunday, Sep. 23 in a 12 p.m. match.
