Women's Soccer Record Eight Goals in Shutout Win

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer team continued their dominant play as they pitched their second straight shutout with an 8-0 win over New Mexico Highlands. The eight Mountain Lion goals in Sunday's match are the most goals scored since Sep. 10, 2010 when UCCS beat McMurray State in a 10-0 home win.

Five goals found the back of the net in the first half with Tarah Patterson accounting for two of them within the first eight minutes of the match. After Madison Tominello scored her second goal on the season in the 25th minute to make the score 3-0, Tori Maydew came back seconds later to record her team leading fifth goal for the season.

With the three goals in the second half, the Mountain Lions now have outscored their opponents 9-1 in the second half this season.

Every Mountain Lion saw the field Sunday as four players including Caitlin Esterle, Anna Gregg, Savannah Mills, and Kendall Stevenson all recorded their first goals of the 2018 season. Two more players would each record at least one goal and one assist in the match as Patterson added two assists to her two goals, and Tominello had one assist in addition to her first half goal.

On the defensive side of the ball, UCCS gave up three shots on Sunday, only allowing a total of one goal in 12 shots over the last three games.

UCCS held the advantage in shots (26-3) and corner kicks (4-0) over New Mexico Highlands, but the Cowgirls held the advantage in saves (6-2) through the match.

UCCS will continue home conference play next week as they take on Western State at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sep. 21.
