Mountain Lions Win Second Straight Home Match

COLORADO SPRINGS – One night after posting a sweep over Fort Lewis College, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team earned a 3-2 win Saturday night against Adams State University in Gallogly Events Center.
 
The Mountain Lions (4-9, 2-3 RMAC) took a 2-0 lead in the first two sets (-19, -10), but the Grizzlies fought back to tie the match (-18, -20) before UCCS won the fifth set, 15-12.
 
The Mountain Lions dominated the second set, holding the Grizzlies to only 10 points and a -.045 hitting percentage.  UCCS tallied 13 kills to the Mountain Lions five and hit a solid .391 at the net.  Taylor Smith served four aces in the set while six Mountain Lions accounted for at least two kills.  Three of Smith's aces came in a 9-0 run by the Mountain Lions as they grabbed a 14-2 lead.  Smith sealed the win with her fourth ace for the final point of the set.
 
UCCS never trailed in the fifth set and posted a 76 sideout percentage (10-of-13).
 
The Mountain Lions recorded 11 aces against ASU, five of which came from Smith and four from Lauryn Shockley.
 
Offensively, Smith led UCCS with 13 kills. Lauren Brown and Josie Russell added 10 kills each.  Brown also blocked four attacks (three solo) and Russell assisted on four blocks.  As a team, the Mountain Lions finished with nine blocks.
 
Raelynn Edge tallied 42 assists while contributing four kills and five digs.  Libero Jordyn Kinsey tallied 14 digs and an ace.
 
The Mountain Lions will be on the road next weekend at Black Hills State University on Sept. 21, and South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on Sept. 22.
