COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team matched up with Regis University in a home conference opener Friday night, as both teams left with a tie in their conference record after a 1-1 double overtime draw.
The Mountain Lions would trail for a majority of the game as Regis came through to make the first strike in the 16
th minute, off of a Porter Milner throw-in from 20 yards out that placed a ball right in front of goal that Joe Mansfield headed in for the 1-0 lead.
It wouldn't be until the 71
st minute that UCCS would catch the Rangers back on their heels as
Alex VonHolle streaked down the right sideline to hit
Corey Carabajal in stride on a perfectly placed cross. Carabajal would seal the deal and head one into the left side of the net to notch the score 1-1, and record his third goal of the season with VonHolle recording his team leading third assist.
From there, the score remained level as both team try to capitalize off of opportunities towards the end of regulation, but would come up short due to tough defensive play on both ends. UCCS would record three shots in the final 10 minutes in regulation while the Rangers had two shots and a corner kick in the final four minutes, before the game headed into overtime.
Through 20 minutes of overtime play, Regis out-shot UCCS 6-2 and added two corner kicks to UCCS' zero in the draw.
The Mountain Lions held the advantage in shots (16-14), corner kicks (6-3), and saves (3-1) over Regis. But Regis would hold the advantage in shots on goal over UCCS 4-2.
Conference matchups resume as UCCS battles Colorado School of Mines at home Sunday, Sep. 16 at 12 p.m.
