ST. GEORGE, Utah – A strong start by the University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team propelled the Mountain Lions to a 3-2 win over Adams State University in a non-conference match at the Dixie State University Classic Friday night in St. George, Utah. The win moves the Mountain Lions to 2-3 on the season.
The Mountains Lions started the first set with a solid .415 attack percentage after notching 20 kills on 41 attempts to win the set, 25-19. ASU came back in set two to win in extra points, 30-28.
In the third set, UCCS dominated the Grizzlies, 25-16, to take a 2-1 match lead. After the Grizzlies evened the match with a 25-22 fourth set win, the Mountain Lions came back in the fifth set, 15-11. UCCS went on a 5-0 run early in the set to take a 5-2 lead they would not relinquish. The Mountain Lions capitalized on two aces and six errors by ASU in the final set.
Alyssa Brinton led both teams with 20 kills and a .436 hitting mark to go with her 18 digs.
Josie Russell was errorless in 22 total attempts at the net, hitting .636 with 14 kills.
Lauren Brown was active at the net with 16 kills and only two errors and added two solo blocks while assisting on two other blocks.
Jordyn Kinsey served up all three aces for UCCS and dug up a match high 28 attacks.
Raelynn Edge added a match high 75 assists, accounting for all but three of UCCS' assists.
UCCS will face No. 18 Tarleton State University on Friday at 11:30 a.m., and host team Dixie State University at 7 p.m.
