GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – May 10 –
Jonathan Cowles pitched the first seven and one-third innings Thursday afternoon to help the No. 3 seed University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team defeat No. 6 seed Regis University, 4-3, at Suplizio Field in Grand Junction.
The win is the first conference tournament win for the Mountain Lions who improve to 28-22 on the season.
UCCS took a 2-0 lead in the second inning after posting four hits.
Tyler Butz singled to the short stop to reach first base.
Cody Norton added a single up the middle to move Butz to second base.
Walker Rumsey moved Butz to third base on a fly out, followed by
Matthew McDermott's single that scored Butz.
Efrain Medina batted home Norton for the second run of the game.
The Mountain Lions added two more runs to their lead in the sixth inning on Norton's home run that also scored
Zach Hall.
Regis scored three runs off a triple in the seventh inning to prevent the shutout.
Cowles finished the game allowing seven hits and three runs.
Daniel Silva finished the game on the mound, holding the Rangers to three hits and no runs.
Norton drove in two runs and scored twice off two hits. Medina went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. McDermott added an RBI after going 2-for-4.
UCCS will face top seed Colorado Mesa University on Friday at 3 p.m.
