GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – May 11, 2018 – Top seed Colorado Mesa University handed the University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team a 6-4 setback Friday afternoon, eliminating the Mountain Lions from the double elimination tournament, hosted by CMU at Suplizio Field in Grand Junction.
The Mavericks were on the scoreboard first with three runs in the second inning. The Mountain Lions, who were the home team in the elimination game, cut into CMU's lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning. With two outs,
Cody Norton singled through the left side to score
Jamie Crabtree. After stealing second base, Norton scored UCCS' second run of the inning after
Walker Rumsey's reached base on an error.
Down 6-2 in the sixth inning, the Mountain Lions added two runs, their final scores of the game.
Jeremy Hochmuth hit a double to left center scoring
Jaeden Hegmann from first base. Hochmuth scored the fourth run for UCCS from
Zach Hall's sac fly to left field.
Hochmuth accounted for two of the Mountain Lions six hits. He added a run batted in and one run scored while making nine putouts at first base.
Twelfth-ranked CMU tallied 17 hits against UCCS, six of which came in the second inning.
The Mountain Lions end their season 28-23 overall.
