COLORADO SPRINGS – April 28, 2018 – Saturday's game two between the University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team and Colorado State University-Pueblo ended in a walk-off error, giving the Mountain Lions a 3-2 win over the Pack. The Mountain Lions lost the first game of the doubleheader, 10-6.
The win clinched the Steel and Silver Trophy for UCCS, giving the Mountain Lions at least 36 points in the series.
In the bottom of the seventh inning of game two,
Jaeden Hegmann led off the inning with a single to the right side. With Jeremy Hockmuth at the plate, Hegmann advanced to second base on a balk. Facing one out,
Zach Hall drew a walk putting runners on first and second base.
Jake Sellinger followed with a double to left field that scored Hegmann to tie the game at 2-2. The Pack intended to intentionally walk the next batter –
Cody Norton – but Norton hit a fly ball to centerfield that was misplayed, scoring Hall for the game-winning run.
Hegmann accounted for two of the Mountain Lions four hits.
Jonathan Cowles pitched a complete game, holding the Pack to four hits, two runs and striking out two batters.
In game one on Saturday, the Mountain Lions trailed 3-0 after the top half of the first inning before tying the game in the bottom half. Hegmann's single to right center scored
Efrain Medina, who reached base on a double.
Jeremy Hochmuth hit a double down the left field line to score Hegmann. Two batters later, Hall added the third double of the inning, scoring Hochmuuth.
The Mountain Lions final three runs came in the bottom of the third inning when Hochmuth,
Bryan Chapin and Hall hit back-to-back-back single home runs.
Daniel Silva suffered the loss on the mound, moving to 3-4 on the season. Silva pitched the first 4.2 innings, allowing six earned runs on seven hits and fanning four batters.
UCCS (25-21, 19-15 RMAC) and the ThunderWolves (24-19, 16-14 RMAC) will play the final game of the series Sunday at 12 p.m. at Mountain Lion Park.
