DENVER – April 23, 2018 – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team extended their winning streak to five games Monday afternoon with a 9-4 win at MSU Denver. UCCS lost the series finale, 5-4. Monday's second game was halted for more than an hour due to a lightning delay.
The split moves UCCS to 23-20 on the season and 17-14 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Tyler Butz opened the first game on Monday with a double to left field to score
Zach Hall and tie the game at 1-1 in the second inning. One inning later, UCCS tied the game for the second time, 2-2, after
Jeremy Hochmuth scored on a wild pitch. The Mountain Lions grabbed their first lead of the game in the fourth inning when
Matthew McDermott reached base on an error that allowed
Scott Martinez to score.
UCCS would keep the lead the remainder of the game with the help of Hall's three-run home run in the fifth inning, boosting the lead to four runs, 6-2.
Hochmuth recorded his second run of the game on a wild pitch again, this time in the seventh inning.
Jake Sellinger plated a run on Butz' single to left field in the seventh inning, followed by the Mountain Lions final run of the game by
Bryan Chapin's single to bring home
Alex Bates.
Hochmuth and Martinez each posted a stolen base, and they were both hit by a pitch twice.
Hall scored twice and drove in three runs. Chapin drew three walks and added one hit, one run and one RBI. Hochmuth scored three times after going 1-for-3 at the plate. Butz finished with two hits and two runs batted in.
Daniel Silva pitched the first eight innings on the mound to post his third win. He allowed three earned runs on six hits and struck out six batters.
Korey Cirks held the Roadrunners hitless in the final inning.
In the series finale, MSU Denver hit a walk off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to snap the Mountain Lions longest winning streak in program history.
Butz went 3-for-4 in the series finale with two runs batted in.
Jamie Crabtree added one hit (homerun), two runs scored and drew a walk.
Defensively, Hochmuth led UCCS with six putouts at first base.
The Mountain Lions will play their final RMAC series of the regular season April 27-29 at home against Colorado State-Pueblo.
