LAS VEGAS, N.M. – April 22, 2018 –
Lexi Andersen hit a grand slam in the third inning of Sunday's game one at New Mexico Highlands University to lead the University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team to a 6-3 win. UCCS held the Cowgirls to two runs in the series finale to win the game, 7-2, and complete the doubleheader sweep. The Mountain Lions leave Las Vegas, N.M. winning three-of-four games.
UCCS enters the final weekend of the regular season 23-25 overall and 18-18 in league games.
All six of the Mountain Lions runs in the first game came in the third inning.
Melissa Martinek started the inning with her first homerun of the season. With two outs and the bases load,
Rayle Glover was hit by a pitch that sent home
Whitney Weber. The next batter, Andersen, hit a home run over the left field fence to give UCCS the 6-0 lead.
The Cowgirls prevented the shutout, scoring all three of their runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Martinek tallied three hits, one run and one run batted it. Weber added two hits and a run scored.
Taylor Reidhead pitched all seven innings for her 11
th win of the season. She allowed only two earned runs and held NMHU to six hits while fanning five batters.
In the series finale, Weber hit a double down the left field line and advanced to third base on an error.
Lexi Belligan batted Weber home on a single up the middle. Belligan scored the second run of the opening inning after Glover was hit by a pitch with the bases load.
NMHU tied the game in the bottom of the first inning, but UCCS plated two runs in each of the third and fourth innings.
Taylor White reached base in the third inning on a fielder's choice and advanced to second while
Alex Cook scored on an error.
Kylie Barnard hit a sacrifice fly that scored Glover for a UCCS lead, 4-2.
In the fourth inning, Reidhead plated Belligan and Martinek on a double to left center, extending the Mountain Lions lead to 6-2 after four innings.
UCCS' final run of the game was scored in the sixth inning when Cook doubled to left center to score Weber.
The Mountain Lions finished the game with 12 hits. Weber and Belligan each tallied two hits and two runs scored.
Cami Duffey earned her 10
th victory in the circle after pitching all seven innings. Duffey struck out three batters and allowed 12 hits.
UCCS will play host to Black Hills State University at Mountain Lion Field April 28-29.
