Baseball Takes Two from Roadrunners, 11-2 and 8-1

Mountain Lions hit six home runs in two games

DENVER – April 22, 2018 – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team won a pair of games Sunday afternoon at MSU Denver, holding the Roadrunners to three runs.  UCCS won the series opener, 11-2, and game two, 8-1.
 
The wins improve the Mountain Lions to 22-19 on the season and 16-13 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
 
Zach Hall hit two home runs in the first game, starting with a single shot to center field in the second inning.
 
Tyler Butz started the six-run scoring spree in the fifth inning after scoring an unearned run.  Jaeden Hegmann reached on a fielder's choice that brought in Scott Martinez.  With two outs and the bases loaded, Hall notched his second home run of the game to score Jeremy Hochmuth, Hegmann and Efrain Medina.
 
UCCS added two more runs in the seventh and eighth innings, sealing the win, 11-2.
 
In the seventh inning, Cody Norton went yard to score Hall.  Norton drew a walk in the eighth inning to bring in Hegmann.  The next batter, Butz, hit a sac fly to score Jamie Crabtree.
 
MSU Denver was held scoreless until the seventh inning when they scored two runs.
 
Colin Ciecere improved to 4-3 on the mound after pitching the first seven innings and surrendering five hits and two earned runs while fanning five batters.
 
Hall went 3-for-4 with five runs batted in and one run scored.  Norton, Hegmann and Martinez each tallied two hits.  Norton chipped in three RBIs and a run scored.
 
In Sunday's game two, MSU Denver took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.  The Mountain Lions took the lead in the third inning with two runs from Hockmuth's two-run home run.
 
UCCS' offense exploded for six runs in the fifth inning.  Hegmann singled up the middle to score Medina, followed by  Hockmuth's second home run of the game, this time to left center to plate Hegmann.  Jake Sellinger finished the inning with a three-run home run, scoring Hall and Bryan Chapin.
 
Hochmuth accounted for four RBIs and two runs scored off two hits. 
 
Jonathan Cowles earned his second win on the mound, allowing only one run on three hits.  UCCS' defense and pitching corps of Cowles, Dagin Renck and Bailey Hansen held the Roadrunners to five hits.
 
Both teams will be back in action for a doubleheader on Monday, beginning at 3 p.m.
