Mountain Lions Split at New Mexico Highlands

UCCS run-rules Cowgirls in series opener, 10-2

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – April 21, 2018 – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs scored 10 runs on 12 hits to run-rule New Mexico Highlands University in five innings, 10-2 Saturday afternoon.  UCCS lost game two of the series, 5-4.
 
The split moves UCCS to 21-25 on the season and 16-18 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
 
In the series opener, four of the Mountain Lions' 10 runs were scored in the first inning, starting off with Lexi Belligan's double to right center the scored Whitney WeberTaylor Reidhead added two more runs with a home run to plate Belligan.  Rayle Glover added the fourth run of the inning from Saleen Quinonez' single.
 
Belligan added her second RBI of the game in the second inning when she scored Melissa Martinek from third base.
 
The Mountain Lions' lead went to 8-0 in the fourth inning.  After hitting a triple to center field, Weber scored on an error, followed by Alex Cook's home run that also scored Reidhead.
 
Reidhead sealed the win for UCCS in the top of the fifth inning, adding two more runs batted in when she singled to the left side to score Weber and Quinonez. 
 
Both of the Cowgirls two runs came in the bottom of the fifth inning. 
 
Reidhead finished with four RBIs on two hits and two runs scored.  Weber scored three times on three hits, and Belligan and Cook each batted in two runs.
 
Reidhead pitched all five innings for her 10th win this season, holding NMHU to two runs on three hits and striking out seven batters.
 
In Saturday's game two, the Mountain Lions grabbed a 2-0 lead after one inning when Martinek and Reidhead crossed home plate. 
 
NMHU took their first lead of the day with three runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth inning.
 
Trailing 5-2 heading into the top of the sixth inning, Belligan doubled down the right field line to bring in Martinek and Barnard, but UCCS fell short, 5-4.
 
Belligan drove in two of the Mountain Lions four runs. 
 
Cami Duffey suffered the loss in the circle, allowing five runs on seven hits in six innings of work.  She moves to 9-13 on the season.
 
UCCS will play their final road games of the regular season tomorrow at NMHU. First pitch of the doubleheader will go out at 11 a.m.
