Baseball Downed in Final Inning at NMHU, 8-7

Mountain Lions fall in series opener at New Mexico Highlands

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – April 13, 2018 – Leading 7-5 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, New Mexico Highlands University plated three runs to hand the University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team an 8-7 loss Friday afternoon in Las Vegas, N.M.
 
Zach Hall hit his 13th home run of the season in the top of the fifth inning to put the Mountain Lions on the scoreboard.
 
The Cowboys responded to score one run in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, extending their lead to 5-1.
 
UCCS mounted a comeback in the final two innings.  In the eighth inning, Efrain Medina batted in Scott Martinez, followed by Matthew McDermott who scored an unearned run, bringing the Mountain Lions within two runs of NMHU, 5-3.
 
After holding NMHU scoreless in the eighth inning, UCCS posted four runs in the final inning to grab a 7-5 lead.
 
With two outs to start the ninth inning, Jake Sellinger hit a double to left center to reach base.  Martinez batted Sellinger home on a single to left center.  Two batters later, Medina reached base on an error and then advanced to second base, bringing McDermott home.  The Mountain Lions final run of the game came from Jaedman Hegmann's single to plate Medina.
 
The Cowboys closed the game scoring three runs on four hits to take the win, 8-7.
 
Sellinger went 2-for-2 with one run scored.  McDermott added two hits and two runs, and Medina accounted for two of the Mountain Lions six runs.
 
Colin Cicere pitched the first 5.0 innings of the game, allowing three earned runs and fanning four batters.  Brett Bowyer suffered the loss, pitching the final two-thirds inning, surrendering three runs (two earned) on four hits.
 
Both teams will square off for a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.
