Baseball Scores School Record 21 Runs

Mountain Lions Split Doubleheader at NMHU

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – April 14, 2018 – Efrain Medina drove in four runs and scored twice as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team scored a record high 21 runs Saturday afternoon in a 21-1 win at New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, N.M.  The Mountain Lions dropped the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, 6-2.
 
UCCS (19-19, 13-13 RMAC) tallied their first six runs of the game in the second inning.  Matthew McDermott hit a grounder to first base leading Cody Norton home.  Medina followed with a three-run homer, his fifth home run of the season.  Jamie Crabtree added a single to left field to plate Jaeden HegmannZach Hall finished the second inning scoring spree with a single to drive home Jeremy Hochmuth.
 
In the third inning, McDermott crossed home plate on a passed ball and Medina scored his second run of the game on Hochmuth's RBI.  Hall notched his second run batted in on a single to centerfield to score Hegmann and give UCCS a commanding 9-0 lead after three innings. 
 
The Mountain Lions added two more runs in the fourth inning and two in the fifth inning before scoring seven runs in the sixth inning.  UCCS tallied five hits as NMHU committed two errors that led to seven runs in the sixth inning.  McDermott notched his third home run of the season after hitting a two-run homerun to left centerfield.
 
The Cowboys (15-26, 10-17 RMAC) lone run of the game came in the bottom of the seventh inning with a double on two outs.
 
Taylor Keil (three), Hall (two) and Butz (two) each drove in multiple runs for UCCS.  McDermott, Walker Rumsey and Crabtree each plated three runs.
 
UCCS finished with 18 hits, 16 RBIs and drew seven walks.
 
Jonathan Cowles pitched a complete game, surrendering only one run on two hits and fanning six batters.
 
In Saturday's first game of the day, the Mountain Lions suffered a 6-2 setback.
 
Medina and Hall accounted for four of UCCS' seven hits and both runs scored.  Hegmann and Jake Sellinger batted in both runs. 

Three of the Mountain Lions seven hits were doubles by Median, Bryan Chapin and Hall.
 
Daniel Silva went the distance, allowing six runs on 11 hits and four strikeouts.
 
The final game of the four game series will start Sunday at 12 p.m.
