AVE MARIA, Fla. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's lacrosse team got their 2018 season underway with a convincing 21-8 win against Ave Maria on Thursday.
After being tied at 4-4, the Mountain Lions reeled off 10 goals over the final seven minutes of the first half to take a commanding 14-4 lead into halftime against their NAIA opponent.
UCCS pelted the Gyrenes' goal in the first 30 minutes with 22 of their 29 first half shots being on frame.
In the second half, the Mountain Lions added seven more goals as they set a new program record for goals scored in a game. The previous best was 17 goals, which was set against Midland early last season.
Individually,
Melissa Reeves scored a game-high five goals as
Brianna Martinez added four. Both
Madison Ellis and
Mallory Corrigan each scored three times.
Martinez led with a total of seven points for UCCS as she was credited with three assists.
In goal,
Emma Becker earned her first win as a Mountain Lion after making seven saves.
UCCS continues their Florida road this on Saturday when they face first-year program Palm Beach Atlantic at 12 p.m. MST.
