COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After starting the game missing their first 12 field goal attempts, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team turned a corner in the second quarter to earn a 65-57 win at home Sunday afternoon against St. Edward's University.
Madi Gaibler snapped a 0-for-12 field goal shooting mark by UCCS to score the Mountain Lions first points of the game six and a half minutes into the first stanza. UCCS finished the opening quarter making 4-of-18 from the floor (22.2 percent) and were outscored by the Hilltoppers, 23-9.
In the second quarter, the Mountain Lions went on a 21-9 run to get within two points of SEU.
Kelly O'Flannigan completed a three-point play with 37 seconds left in the half to knot the game, 33-33. The Mountain Lions trailed by two at the half, 35-33, after overcoming a 14-point deficit. UCCS shot 68.8 percent from the floor in the second quarter after nailing 11-of-16 field goals.
UCCS came out of halftime to take their first lead of the game, 37-35, less than two minutes into the second half. The Mountain Lions lead would grow to 11 points in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Hilltoppers in the second half, 32-22.
Abby Feickert made 6-of-9 field goals and both three-point attempts for a team high 15 points. She also pulled down seven rebounds.
Jae Ferrin grabbed a game high 11 rebounds (five offensive) and made 4-of-9 field goals for eight points.
Kelly O'Flannigan chipped in 10 points and missed only two shots from the floor while dishing out three assists and adding four rebounds.
Gaibler came off the bench to spark the Mountain Lions with 11 points, four dimes and eight caroms.
UCCS scored 16 points off of SEU's 12 turnovers and added 22 fast break points.
For the ninth time this season, UCCS out-rebounded their opponent. The Mountain Lions held a 10-rebound advantage today over SEU, 44-34.
Isabel Hernandez led all scorers with 20 points (8-of-19).
The Mountain Lions will continue their six-game homestand Jan. 4-5 when they play host to Dixie State University and Westminster College. Both games will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. in Gallogly Events Center.
