COLORADO SPRINGS – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's basketball team outlasted Regis University Saturday evening to hand the Rangers their first loss of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season, 84-80. The win improves the Mountain Lions to 4-5 on the season and 2-2 in league games. The loss moves RU to 6-3 on the year and snapped a four-game winning streak.
The game featured 12 lead changes and 12 ties with the Mountain Lions leading the Rangers for nearly 20 minutes.
The Mountain Lions largest lead of the game was eight points, 63-55, with 11:44 left in the game. Regis tied the game after going on a 14-6 run and took the lead after RU's Brian Dawson hit four straight free throws on two possessions.
Trailing 72-69,
Dalton Walker stepped to the line at 4:03 to make two free throws and bring UCCS within one point, 72-71. After Walker's free throws, Dawson made a jumper for a three-point RU lead, but
Brandon Malone responded on the next trip down the court, bringing UCCS within one point, 74-73, with 3:27 left in regulation.
Padiet Wang blocked a Regis jumper leading to a RU foul. After a media timeout, Walker made two more from the charity stripe to give UCCS a 75-74 lead.
DaRaun Clark extended the lead for UCCS after making his only three-pointer of the game.
Tied at 80-80 with 44 ticks left in regulation, Clark hit a layup to give UCCS a two-point lead with only 14 seconds remaining. RU missed a jumped for a chance to tie the game with three seconds left. Walker grabbed the rebound and made two more free throws to seal the win, 84-80.
Walker came off the bench to score a team high 22 points. He was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line, including six in the last four minutes. He added 12 points from long range, sinking 4-of-8, while dishing out a game high five assists.
Isaiah Wilson was part of a bench unit that outscored Regis, 41-25. Wilson made 4-of-5 from downtown and finished with 15 points.
Clark chipped in 11 points and pulled down six rebounds to go with three assists and a blocked shot.
Four of Wang's eight points were from the free throw. He added seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and blocked two shots.
Ed Bourke was almost perfect from the floor, making 4-of-5. He also added a game high eight rebounds.
As a team, UCCS shot 40.6 percent from the floor (28-of-69), 31.3 percent from behind the arc (10-of-32), and 85.7 percent from the charity stripe (18-of-21).
The Mountain Lions outrebounded the Rangers, 45-38, and outscored RU on second chance points, 22-13.
RU's Jarrett Brodbeck led all scorers with 25 points. A defensive adjustment at halftime by UCCS held Brodbeck to six second half points.
UCCS will play host to Colorado Christian University on Sunday at 3 p.m.
